Job Description

About the Role Aspetto is seeking a hands-on Electronic Hardware Product Development Engineer to help develop a new compact electronic product from prototype through production-ready design. This is not a facilities, construction, power distribution, PLC, or building electrical role. This is a hands-on electronic product development role focused on custom hardware, embedded systems, PCB design, battery-powered electronics, sensors, communications-related hardware, prototype testing, and manufacturable design. The selected engineer must be comfortable owning hardware development directly: defining the electrical architecture, designing schematics and PCBs, selecting components, building prototypes, bringing up boards, debugging issues on the bench, documenting revisions, and preparing designs for manufacturing. Responsibilities Develop electrical architecture for compact electronic products Design schematics and custom printed circuit boards from requirements Select electronic components based on performance, size, availability, cost, and manufacturability Design embedded hardware using microcontrollers, processors, sensors, communication interfaces, and peripheral modules Design power-management systems for battery-powered electronic products Calculate power budgets, current draw, battery runtime, regulator sizing, thermal margin, and protection requirements Design and test charging, protection, power regulation, and low-voltage distribution circuits Assemble, solder, modify, troubleshoot, and improve functional prototypes Perform PCB bring-up, including first power-on, rail verification, signal testing, interface validation, and hardware debugging Use oscilloscopes, multimeters, bench power supplies, logic analyzers, soldering tools, and rework equipment Support hardware-in-the-loop testing and prototype validation Integrate commercially available modules and components into custom hardware designs Support communication-related hardware integration, including RF-aware layout considerations, antenna connections, coaxial interfaces, grounding, shielding, and filtering Develop bills of material, engineering drawings, test procedures, and technical documentation Coordinate with PCB manufacturers, assembly houses, component suppliers, and contract manufacturers Review and respond to DFM/DFA feedback Maintain configuration control through prototype revisions Improve designs for reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and production readiness Work closely with internal engineering, product development, and manufacturing personnel Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field Five or more years of hands-on electronic product development experience Experience personally designing custom PCBs from schematic through layout, fabrication package, assembly, bring-up, and revision Experience with PCB bring-up, hardware debugging, board-level troubleshooting, and prototype rework Experience developing battery-powered or portable electronic products Experience with embedded systems design, including microcontrollers, processors, sensors, UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, ADCs, or similar interfaces Experience designing or integrating power-management circuits, regulators, charging circuits, protection circuits, and low-voltage power systems Ability to calculate system power requirements, current draw, battery operating duration, and thermal considerations Experience selecting components and preparing BOMs for manufacturable designs Experience using standard electronic lab and diagnostic equipment Ability to personally solder, assemble, modify, and debug prototype electronics Experience using Altium Designer, OrCAD, KiCad, Eagle, or similar PCB design software Strong documentation, problem-solving, and communication skills Ability to work on-site in Fredericksburg, Virginia Preferred Qualifications Experience developing compact, rugged, portable, wearable, or field-deployable electronic products Experience with RF, wireless, SDR, GNSS/GPS, antennas, communication equipment, or RF-adjacent hardware Familiarity with signal integrity, grounding, shielding, filtering, EMI/EMC considerations, and coaxial RF connections Experience with hardware-in-the-loop design, automated test setups, or prototype validation systems Experience moving a product from prototype into low-rate or full production Experience coordinating with PCB fabricators, PCB assembly vendors, contract manufacturers, and electronics suppliers Experience with DFM, DFA, component lifecycle management, alternate part selection, and revision control Familiarity with embedded Linux, Raspberry Pi, compute modules, microcontrollers, or similar hardware platforms Experience integrating sensors, batteries, displays, wireless modules, GPS/GNSS modules, and user-interface hardware Not a Fit If This role is likely not a fit if your experience is primarily in building electrical systems, construction electrical design, power distribution, high-voltage systems, PLC/SCADA automation, facilities engineering, or purely academic/research projects without hands-on product hardware ownership. Work Location This position is full-time and on-site in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
