The Planning & Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. The process is governed through development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances. PDD is currently looking to fill a vacancy for Fire Protection Engineer. The Fire Protection Engineer reviews building plans and inspects existing structures to ensure conformance to fire protection codes and standards, and to assist in writing and updating fire protection codes. Work involves considerable coordination with the Fire Department, Planning and Development Department, and other departments regarding the development and enforcement of fire protection codes. This position may supervise clerical and professional level employees.Examples of Typical Job Functions:
Provides technical assistance and identifying permitting requirements to architects, contractors, engineers, and other private industry professionals in interpreting and complying with fire codes and standards. Reviews construction site plans and building plans for compliance with fire protection codes and standards. Recommends amendments to national fire codes. Review Fire Life Safey Reports for compliance with adopted codes and ordinances. Determines whether water availability and water delivery systems are adequate to protect buildings. Evaluates the storage, handling, and usage of flammable and combustible materials, and hazardous materials for compliance with fire codes, standards, and other regulations. Leads the coordination of the Planning and Development Department, Fire Department, and other departments in the consistent enforcement of fire protection codes, ordinances and standards Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.IDEAL CANDIDATE
The knowledge to conduct integrated fire life safety reports and engineering analysis. Knowledge of Life safety systems including fire detection, fire alarm, codes, regulations, and fire suppression systems.SALARY Pay Range:
$86,590.40 to $127,920.00 annually.Hiring Range:
$86,590.40 to $121,825.50 annually.Pay Range Explanation:

Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase. Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease. Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade. One year of experience in fire protection engineering Or two years structural plan and code compliance review that includes fire suppression systems. and a bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. By the end of probation, must obtain the requirements listed in one of the options below: Option 1: ICC Fire Plans Examiner (F3)AND NFPA
Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) Option 2: Registered Professional Engineer/Fire Protection (PE) in the State of Arizona AND ICC Fire Plans Examiner (F3) Option 3: ICC Fire Plans Examiner (F3)AND 3 NICET
Level III or IV certifications in at least 2 of the following areas: Fire Alarm Systems Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems Special Hazard Systems Water-Based Systems Layout All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. The minimum qualifications listed above, plus: Fire prevention plan review/ inspection experience. NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist. ICC Fire Plans Examiner or ICC Fire Inspector II certification. Experience in building construction, design, and materials as related to fire prevention and fire control.RECRUITMENT DATES
