Job Description

Professional Summary:
The Client is seeking a Senior Safety Engineer to provide strategic technical leadership and engineering governance in the disciplines of process safety, loss prevention, and fire protection for complex process facilities and capital projects. The ideal candidate will apply advanced engineering principles, industry standards, regulatory mandates, and risk-based methodologies to identify hazards, mitigate operational risk, and establish comprehensive engineering solutions that protect personnel, assets, the environment, and business continuity. Serving as a senior technical subject matter expert, this role is expected to independently direct complex technical assignments, facilitate safety studies, engage directly with multidisciplinary project teams and clients, and mentor junior engineering personnel.
Core Responsibilities:
Execute and lead comprehensive process hazard analyses and risk evaluations, including HAZID, HAZOP, What-If/Checklist, LOPA, and related qualitative/semi-quantitative assessment methodologies. Evaluate process hazards concerning flammable, toxic, reactive, and high-energy materials across major industrial assets, including onshore methanol processing facilities. Formulate, review, and finalize process safety philosophies, design criteria, technical specifications, and safety engineering deliverables. Assess safeguards, independent protection layers (IPLs), mitigation systems, and risk-reduction strategies for critical processes. Conduct and audit consequence analyses detailing flammable/toxic releases, vapor dispersion, fire, explosion hazards, and major accident scenarios. Direct facility siting initiatives, occupied building risk assessments, equipment layout/spacing, and hazardous area classifications. Lead Management of Change (MOC) protocols, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), root cause incident investigations, and broad Process Safety Management (PSM) initiatives. Audit multi-discipline engineering design documents—including PFDs, P&IDs, equipment datasheets, plot plans, and cause-and-effect diagrams—to verify absolute alignment with safety standards. Serve as a collaborative, highly adaptable team member capable of navigating complex client requirements, managing challenging stakeholder dynamics, and driving team alignment.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a closely related ABET-accredited discipline. Minimum of 12 years of progressive engineering experience, demonstrating proven leadership in managing technical teams and driving process safety or loss prevention programs. Extensive technical background in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, hydrogen, or related process industries. Deep domain confidence in either Loss Prevention or Process Safety Management, with strong awareness and foundational knowledge in the complementary discipline. Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing, analyzing, and discussing industry-standard safety engineering software tools. Advanced working knowledge of process safety principles, industrial fire protection systems, and relevant industry codes (e.g., NFPA, API, OSHA, IFC, IBC). Excellent client-facing, communication, and conflict-resolution capabilities with a hands-on approach to problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications:
Active Professional Engineer (PE) License, or an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification with direct eligibility and timeline to obtain PE licensure. Advanced technical degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in Engineering, Safety, or Fire Protection. Certified Functional Safety Expert/Professional (CFSE/CFSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent credential. Extensive experience within EPC, consulting, or major owner/operator environments, including direct field exposure to operating facilities, construction, or commissioning activities.
