Job Description
Location Altoona, PA Purpose of Position The Supplier Quality Engineer will ensure that all outside sourced Veeder-Root materials and products are manufactured according to applicable codes and standards. Work includes qualifying suppliers, conducting source inspections, comparing specifications, reviewing manufacturability of new designs, collaborating with suppliers and company Engineers and Operations personnel, examining suitability and availability of items for delivery, and coordinating the disposition of nonconforming items. Key Responsibilities
- Leads the applicable team and team members to resolve materials quality issues and increase manufacturing productivity.
- Frequently participate in, and lead continuous improvement workshops (kaizens) with team members to improve quality, delivery, and productivity at both supplier location and VR manufacturing facility.
- Perform manufacturing process audits at external supplier locations; issue corrective actions to suppliers and following up to ensure their completion; performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
- Review, approve, and create improvement plans for product submission packages (PPAP, FAI etc.).
- Assures that customer complaints caused by raw materials are addressed expeditiously and appropriate root cause corrective action are provided to the customer and implemented within the process. Contributes to maintaining strong positive working relationships with customers and suppliers.
- Continuously evaluates materials and the processes/systems to produce them to assure capability. Prioritizes and works with Supply Chain and Operations for continual improvement of raw materials process capability and consistency
- Assist procurement with supplier selection, development and risk.
- Administer/lead supplier quality/manufacturing audits.
- Develop supplier quality improvement program.
- Other duties as assigned by Strategic Sourcing Leader. Background and Skills
- BS/BA in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Quality or related field of study preferred). Minimum 3 years' experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to communicate complex technical issues clearly and simply. Must have strong interpersonal skills and cooperate well within a team.
- Strong understanding of statistical process control techniques; process capability assessment (Cpk, Ppk).
- Experience with reviewing, approving and creating improvement plans for product submission packages (PPAP, ISIR, FAI etc.).
- Ability to drive to true root cause and identify appropriate short and long-term countermeasures.
- Strong people and communication skills, analytical skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement efforts also essential, along with the ability to coach, and lead individuals and teams.
- Flexibility to work overtime, different shifts, travel on short notice required.
- Ability to work without close supervision.
- Proficient at the use of MS office applications including Word, Excel, and Access.
- Understanding of Lean Manufacturing concepts and methods.
- Understanding of quality tools and metrics.
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) preferred.
