$60,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year Job title: Controls Engineer Job description: We're looking for a Controls Engineer to support our Senior Controls Engineer on the design, programming, integration, and commissioning of control systems for custom automated machinery. This is a hands-on role. You will own defined sections of a machine under senior direction, and you will grow into broader system responsibility as you prove out. You will work on real customer equipment from concept through install, not just desk programming. Projects are custom automation machines, primarily for aerospace fastener production. Key Responsibilities Program and modify PLC logic (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, or equivalent) for machine sequences, I/O, alarms, and interlocks, following architectures set by the senior controls engineer. Build and update HMI screens, alarms, recipes, and operator interfaces. Assist with motion control setup and tuning (servos, VFDs, steppers) and with basic robotics or vision integration when the project calls for it. Wire-check, I/O check, and debug panels and field devices on the shop floor and at customer sites. Support hardware selection (sensors, actuators, drives, safety devices, networks) and keep drawings, tag lists, and programs current. Run system tests, simulations, and troubleshooting on prototypes and installed equipment, and document what you find. Travel for commissioning, startup, and customer training alongside the senior engineer. Follow electrical and machine-safety practices (NFPA 70E, ISO 13849, UL) and our internal controls standards. Qualifications Associate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls, Mechatronics, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience. 2-5 years programming and commissioning automated machinery. Strong technicians moving into engineering will be considered. Working proficiency in at least one major PLC/HMI platform (Allen-Bradley / Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT, or equivalent). Comfort with industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, or Modbus) and reading electrical schematics. Hands-on experience debugging sensors, drives, safety circuits, and machine sequences in a manufacturing environment. Clear communication and the ability to take a scoped task and close it without constant oversight.
Preferred:
motion control, vision, safety PLC experience, panel build exposure, or Python/C# scripting. What We Offer Direct mentorship from a senior controls engineer on custom machines, not maintenance-only work. A path to senior responsibility as the company grows. Shop-floor access to the equipment you program. Relocation assistance.
