Position Summary

We are looking for a Marine Industry Professional, who is ready to bring real-world experience into the classroom and help build this exciting program from the ground up! The Marine Service Technology Instructor is responsible for providing rigorous, hands-on, industry-aligned instruction to high school students enrolled in the Marine Service Technology program. The instructor will prepare students for successful entry into postsecondary education, apprenticeships, industry credentialing, and employment within the marine service and recreational boating industries.

The instructor will provide classroom, laboratory/shop, and practical instruction in marine engine systems, electrical systems, boat design and construction, vessel maintenance and repair, boating safety, vessel transportation, marina operations, metalworking, and related marine technologies. Instruction will emphasize workplace safety, technical proficiency, problem-solving, employability skills, customer service, and professional practices consistent with current marine industry expectations.

The instructor is also responsible for maintaining a safe, organized, and industry-standard marine technology laboratory; managing equipment, tools, and inventory; developing relationships with marine industry partners; supporting work-based learning opportunities; and integrating Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) activities and leadership development into the instructional program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Plan, prepare, and deliver standards-based instruction for Marine Service Technology courses using appropriate classroom, laboratory, shop, and hands-on instructional strategies.

Develop lesson plans, learning objectives, demonstrations, projects, assessments, and laboratory experiences aligned with applicable state CTE course standards.

Provide instruction in the safe use, maintenance, storage, and operation of marine tools, equipment, machinery, hazardous materials, and personal protective equipment.

Teach and reinforce general workplace, emergency, ergonomic, fire suppression, ladder/scaffold, and shop safety practices. The course standards specifically emphasize maintaining a safe work area, appropriate handling of hazardous materials, PPE use, and emergency procedures.

Provide instruction in boating safety and vessel handling, including securing vessels, line handling, knots, docking/mooring, anchoring, and small-boat maneuvering. Prepare students to successfully complete applicable South Carolina boating safety requirements.

Teach the fundamentals of boat design, construction, hull types, materials, and marine applications. Advanced instruction should include appropriate boat-building techniques.

Provide instruction in the identification, maintenance, diagnosis, service, and repair of inboard, inboard/outboard, and outboard marine engine systems, including two-cycle and four-cycle systems.

Teach students to perform routine and seasonal maintenance on gasoline-fueled marine engines using appropriate testing equipment, manufacturer specifications, and recognized industry procedures.

Provide instruction in marine electrical theory, electrical systems, wiring, connectors, fuel systems, plumbing systems, and related marine components using appropriate industry standards and practices, including applicable ABYC standards.

Provide advanced hands-on opportunities such as constructing basic electrical circuits for bilge pumps, navigation/running lights, horns, or similar marine applications.

Teach safe vessel transportation practices, including launching and recovering boats, transferring vessels from trailers to stands, maintaining and troubleshooting boat trailers and trailer lighting, and identifying alternative methods of moving vessels on land.

Provide instruction in marina operations and boatyard services, including seasonal storage preparation, shrink-wrapping, yard equipment, bottom preparation and painting, and other common marine service procedures.

Provide appropriate instruction and supervised practice in metalworking skills, including welding and cutting steel and aluminum, when required by the course curriculum.

Ensure that students follow manufacturer recommendations, industry best practices, applicable U.S. Coast Guard regulations, and relevant marine industry standards during laboratory and shop activities.

Integrate job-specific mathematics, reading, technical writing, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving, technology, and communication skills throughout instruction.

Incorporate employability skills into daily instruction, including work ethic, integrity, teamwork, self-representation, conflict resolution, creativity, communication, time management, resource management, and customer service.

Assess student learning through written assessments, performance-based assessments, projects, demonstrations, laboratory activities, and authentic industry-based tasks.

Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, safety training, certifications, credentials, competencies, and program completion requirements.

Provide appropriate accommodations, differentiation, interventions, and enrichment to support the needs of diverse learners.

Maintain effective classroom and laboratory management that promotes student engagement, professionalism, accountability, and safe work practices.

Maintain an organized, clean, professional, and industry-aligned classroom and laboratory environment.

Conduct routine safety inspections and maintain accurate records of tools, equipment, materials, consumables, and program inventory.

Identify equipment requiring maintenance, repair, or replacement and follow established procedures for reporting and addressing concerns.

Participate in the development and management of the program budget and assist with purchasing equipment, tools, supplies, instructional materials, and technology.

Develop and maintain relationships with local marinas, boat dealerships, marine service facilities, manufacturers, employers, postsecondary institutions, and other industry partners.

Establish and maintain an active industry advisory committee to assist with program improvement, curriculum relevance, equipment recommendations, credentialing, and workforce needs.

Facilitate appropriate work-based learning experiences such as job shadowing, industry tours, guest speakers, internships, apprenticeships, service-learning projects, and cooperative education opportunities.

Support student participation in an appropriate CTSO and provide opportunities for students to develop leadership, teamwork, service, and professional skills. The standards specifically incorporate student organization participation and leadership development.

Prepare students for careers in the marine trades by teaching career exploration, résumé development, professional correspondence, job applications, interviewing, job retention, advancement, and continuing education skills.

Participate in professional development to remain current with marine technology, instructional practices, industry certifications, equipment, safety standards, and emerging technologies.

Perform other duties consistent with the responsibilities of a high school Career and Technical Education instructor as assigned by administration.

EXPERIENCE

Three or more years of recent work experience in marine industry, or a related field

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Holds or has the ability to obtain a South Carolina State Career & Technical Education Teaching Certificate, which includes documentation supporting three years of recent gainful employment in marine or a related field beyond the learning period; one year must be within the last six years
  • Documented education, training, and/or occupational experience in marine service technology, marine mechanics, marine systems, recreational boating, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of inboard, inboard/outboard, and outboard marine engine systems.
  • Knowledge of marine electrical, fuel, plumbing, mechanical, and vessel systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate and maintain tools, diagnostic equipment, shop equipment, and other technology commonly used in the marine service industry.
  • Knowledge of workplace, shop, boating, environmental, and equipment safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to high school students with varying levels of experience and ability.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and classroom/laboratory management skills.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, administrators, employers, and community partners.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant recent industry experience in marine service, marine mechanics, boat repair, marina operations, or a related field.
  • Industry-recognized certifications or credentials relevant to marine service technology.
  • Knowledge of American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) standards and practices.
  • Experience working with U.S. Coast Guard regulations applicable to recreational vessels and marine component installations.
  • Experience with marine diagnostic equipment and current engine technologies.
  • Welding, fabrication, and metalworking experience applicable to marine service.
  • Previous teaching, training, mentoring, apprenticeship supervision, or industry instructional experience.
  • Experience working with high school students or young adults.
  • Experience developing partnerships with employers and coordinating work-based learning opportunities.
  • Physical and Environmental Requirements

The employee must be able to perform duties in classroom, laboratory, shop, marina, and outdoor environments as appropriate to program activities. Duties may require standing for extended periods; bending, reaching, kneeling, and working around vessels and equipment; handling tools and materials; and lifting or assisting with the movement of equipment and supplies within established safety guidelines.

The instructor may work around operating engines, electrical systems, fuels, lubricants, paints, solvents, welding equipment, power tools, boats, trailers, and other equipment commonly associated with marine service environments. Appropriate personal protective equipment and established safety procedures must be followed at all times.

Program Performance Expectations

The Marine Service Technology Instructor will work to ensure that students demonstrate proficiency in applicable course standards, maintain a safe learning environment, earn available industry credentials, develop strong employability skills, participate in meaningful work-based learning experiences, and leave the program prepared to successfully transition into employment, apprenticeship, military service, and/or postsecondary education within the marine industry.

The instructor is expected to maintain a high-quality CTE program that reflects current industry practices and provides students with authentic opportunities to apply technical knowledge through hands-on learning, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and customer-service experiences. The standards progress from foundational marine safety, systems, engines, boating, and marina operations in Marine Technology I-II to more advanced engine maintenance, electrical work, vessel transportation, marina services, metalworking, and career-readiness competencies in Marine Technology III-IV.
