Role Description The PhD Student in Quantum Materials and Devices will engage in full-time, on-site research and training at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. Day-to-day activities include designing and conducting experiments on quantum materials, characterizing device performance, analyzing data, and interpreting results in collaboration with faculty and research teams. The role involves reviewing current literature, developing and testing hypotheses, and contributing to the advancement of quantum device concepts and material platforms. The student will prepare research reports, manuscripts, and conference presentations, participate in group meetings and seminars, and support mentoring of junior students when appropriate. Additional responsibilities may include maintaining laboratory equipment, adhering to safety protocols, and progressing steadily toward dissertation completion and degree requirements. Qualifications Strong foundation in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, with demonstrated interest in quantum materials and quantum devices. Experience with experimental techniques relevant to quantum materials (e.g., two dimensional materials, thin-film growth, nanofabrication, cryogenic measurements, spectroscopy). Proficiency in data analysis, scientific programming, and use of tools such as Python for numerical analysis and visualization. Ability to read, interpret, and synthesize scientific literature, and to communicate research findings clearly through technical writing and presentations. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail in laboratory work, and commitment to safe, responsible research practices. Effective collaboration and interpersonal skills for working within diverse, interdisciplinary research teams. Bachlor's degree or equivalent preparation in a relevant discipline is preferred. Motivation to pursue independent research, meet graduate program milestones, and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and scientific conferences.
