We have multiple technical programs running concurrently, and we are hiring a scientist who will work on ceramic, plastic, and powder processing. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Sr. Scientist - Materials to lead innovative research and development initiatives in materials engineering. In this dynamic role, you will drive the discovery, characterization, and application of advanced materials to enhance product performance and manufacturing processes. You will be involved with various aspects of these programs, including designing the experiments, running them, and interpreting the data. Responsibilities Lead research projects focused on material development, including ceramics, polymers, and composite materials, ensuring alignment with product design and manufacturing goals. Formulate ceramic and metal-ceramic suspensions and pastes: solids loading, dispersant selection, binder systems, rheological tuning for extrusion Conduct comprehensive material testing and analysis using laboratory techniques such as analytical chemistry methods to evaluate properties like mechanical strength, durability, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. Develop and run sintering schedules; diagnose densification, warpage, cracking, and unwanted phase formation Apply statistical analysis and engineering data analysis techniques to interpret experimental results, optimize processes, and improve material performance. Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including mechanical engineering, process engineering, quality control, and manufacturing—to develop scalable fabrication methods such as plastics blow molding, injection molding, and fabrication processes compliant with ASME codes & standards. Manage project schedules effectively by planning experiments, tracking milestones, and coordinating resources to meet development timelines. Write technical reports, monthly deliverables, and proposal content for government sponsors Skills/Requirements PhD in Chemistry, Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field Extensive experience with project scheduling tools to manage multiple research initiatives efficiently. Strong background in materials selection and characterization techniques specific to ceramics. Hands-on laboratory experience with materials testing, materials analysis (including analytical chemistry), and materials science principles. Demonstrated independent experience taking a powder to a densified part: suspension or paste formulation through sintering, with the microstructural characterization to prove what happened Fluency in interpreting data obtained with XRD phase analysis and SEM/EDS Familiarity with statistical analysis methods for research data interpretation and process optimization. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly across cross-functional teams through effective collaboration skills. U.S. person status (citizen or permanent resident). This is a legal requirement on some of our programs, and cannot be waived. Strongly preferred Direct-ink-write, robocasting, or binder-jet experience with ceramic feedstocks Piezoceramic work (PZT, KNN, or similar) Powder metallurgy of ferrous systems; familiarity with layered ternary carbides Preceramic polymer chemistry (polysilazane, polysiloxane, polycarbosilane) and polymer-to-ceramic pyrolysis Basic knowledge of polymer chemistry.
