Job Title:
Staff Professional Job Summary The Staff Professional / Staff Engineer supports engineering, geotechnical, and environmental projects through field and office-based activities. This role involves conducting field observations, material testing, data analysis, reporting, and coordination of assigned tasks. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical aptitude, attention to safety and quality, and the ability to work effectively under supervision in dynamic project environments. Key Responsibilities Conduct field and laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, asphalt, and other construction materials in accordance with applicable ASTM standards, including but not limited to ASTM D1557, D6938, C39, and C231. Observe and document construction activities to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes and standards. Operate and maintain specialized testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges, penetrometers, and concrete testing devices. Accurately record test results and observations and assist with preparation of technical reports. Essential Qualifications & Skills Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year program in Civil Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline. Successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Geologist-in-Training (GIT) examination, or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable timeframe. One to three (1-3) years of experience in construction materials testing or a related field. Working knowledge of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and geotechnical engineering principles. Proficiency with geotechnical software and technical tools. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Additional Skills & Preferred Qualifications Active pursuit of Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Professional Geologist (P.G.) licensure when eligible. Relevant certifications such asACI, ICC, NICET, OSHA
10- or 30-hour training, Nuclear Density Gauge Certification, or other certifications as required by project needs. Work Environment & Physical Requirements This position involves frequent physical activity and fieldwork under varying site conditions. The role requires the ability to lift, carry, and handle equipment and materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Candidates must be able to maneuver heavy equipment including concrete wheelbarrows (150-200 lbs), soil density hammers (approximately 25 lbs), and nuclear density gauges (up to 90 lbs). Physical tasks may include swinging concrete testing devices, hand augering up to 10 feet, and excavating with hand tools. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out ofCHARLOTTE, NC.
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $35.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
