SUMMARY:
The primary responsibility of this position is to bring new products to market by developing material solutions and to modify existing Ames Advanced Materials products with the understanding of the materials science and application technology used in the development of finished products.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following (other duties may be assigned) :
- Independently plan and conduct research experiments, support solving complex technical problems and develop alternatives to accelerate development of new products and modification of existing products aligning with customer/industry specifications
- Develop detailed process including order of addition, critical raw materials, and processing parameters and execute DoE's to test new/modified chemistry for viability and optimization
- Attention to detail and cost-driven mindset when developing new materials and modifying existing products
- Evaluate raw materials to determine chemical and physical properties, composition, structure, and relations to key process/product parameters.
- Ability to observe, analyze, calculate, and interpret results and recommend further action based on results.
- Produce timely project updates, develop presentations, author technical reports, and share reports to internal and external stakeholders
- Record precise results and findings in laboratory book, database and/or files
- Work with raw materials and equipment suppliers to find new chemicals/equipment for product development and alternate supplies of existing chemicals/equipment.
- Responsible for carrying out scale-up of new products from laboratory to pilot and assists engineering/operations personnel in the scale-up from pilot to production.
- Creates and maintains Process Flow, PFMEA and Standard Operating Procedures
- Proactively seek and provide ideas to address technical issues and any failures reported by customers
- Work with quality personnel to review novel testing methods and analytical tools for raw materials and finished products
- Attend at least 1 technical conference, trade show and / or educational course to remain current in the field as it relates to existing and future technologies: ability to present at same
- Follow safety guidelines for handling materials with the use of protective equipment as required
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of work area, laboratory instruments and equipment
- Provide leadership, supervision and training as assigned by R&D Manager.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree, or higher, in chemistry, materials science or related science.
- Broad knowledge in chemistry and materials science with emphasis on inorganic chemistry, fuel cells/electrolysers and electrochemistry.
- Knowledge of materials characterization and processing.
- Able to conduct and utilize literature search methodologies to support own research.
- Able to report findings from DoE's and how they relate/satisfy the goal of the experiments
- Strong organizational skills, multi-tasking and problem solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communiations skills required, including giving presentations.
- Self-motivated to exceed goals, work effectively with minimal direction or feedback and able to make decisions independently.
