Summary Designs, specifies, and tests components for automated inspection systems and/or vibratory conveying systems. Plans, directs, coordinates, and, when necessary, performs activities involving the fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical components and subsystems. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field. Five or more years of related experience. Experience designing major components for food-processing equipment. Demonstrated experience designing sheet-metal, machined, extruded, cast, and molded parts. Knowledge of welding and the design and specification of welded assemblies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned; however, the primary responsibilities include: Takes component designs from initial concept through production. Uses engineering tools, including 3D CAD and analysis software, throughout the design process. Develops and implements functional and reliability tests for new and existing designs. Designs special test equipment and fixtures required for functional and reliability testing. Develops testing methods, procedures, and acceptance criteria for components. Solves problems related to equipment design, manufacturing, performance, and reliability. Gathers and evaluates data from customer sites, the manufacturing floor, Quality Control, and other sources to determine root causes. Uses structured problem-solving techniques to develop and implement solutions. Works with Manufacturing Engineering to develop effective processes for manufacturing components. Works directly with suppliers on the specification, development, selection, and application of purchased parts. Works with support personnel to fabricate test-control equipment and fixtures and to test components. Works with Quality Control to verify that parts conform to specifications and develops appropriate quality plans for components. Travels to customer sites to oversee installations, inspect equipment, test components and subsystems, and assist with or advise on equipment repairs. Works directly with customers to resolve equipment-performance and reliability concerns. Communication Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and applicable governmental regulations. Ability to prepare reports, business correspondence, testing procedures, and technical manuals.
