Mechanical Engineer II Job Description The Mechanical Engineer II will join a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team to support the development of next-generation medical instruments. Working under the guidance of engineering staff, you will contribute to the design, prototyping, testing, documentation, and manufacturing transfer of 3D visualization and guidance systems for microsurgery. You will collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, optical, software, systems, manufacturing, and product teams, gaining experience across the full product-development lifecycle in a regulated environment. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer who is eager to deepen technical expertise, apply sound engineering fundamentals, and grow within a structured, quality-focused setting. Responsibilities Support design activities for new products and improvements to existing products under the direction of experienced engineers. Create and revise 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed part drawings using SolidWorks. Review mechanical drawings, identify issues, and correct them in accordance with standard dimensioning and tolerance practices. Assist with engineering documentation and provide inputs to the Engineering Change Order process. Research mechanical components, materials, fabrication methods, and potential suppliers to support design and manufacturing decisions. Build, assemble, troubleshoot, and test prototypes, fixtures, and engineering samples to validate design concepts. Prepare test setups, collect and analyze data, and draft test procedures and reports to support design verification activities. Maintain accurate part, assembly, bill of materials, and configuration records in accordance with company quality procedures. Participate in design reviews and clearly communicate technical progress, results, and issues to the broader engineering team. Follow company quality procedures, safety practices, and applicable design-control requirements throughout all project activities. Contribute to new product development efforts and support continuous improvement initiatives on existing products. Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, optical, software, systems, manufacturing, and product groups. Essential Skills Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Up to 2 years of relevant experience, including internships, co-op assignments, academic design projects, or equivalent hands-on technical experience (preferred for this early-career role). Basic ability to create 3D models, assemblies, and 2D drawings using SolidWorks and standard dimensioning practices. Foundational understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, statics, mechanics, heat transfer, and tolerance principles. Hands-on experience with prototyping, laboratory tools, test equipment, or 3D printing gained through work or academic projects. Familiarity with common fabrication processes such as machining, sheet metal, molding, and additive manufacturing. Basic data-analysis and problem-solving skills, including experience using spreadsheets or engineering analysis tools. Strong attention to detail and organization in managing design records, documentation, and configuration data. Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to learn in a multidisciplinary engineering environment. Ability to follow established quality procedures, safety practices, and design-control requirements. Additional Skills & Qualifications Exposure to medical-device development, quality systems, design controls, or other regulated industries is a plus but not required. Experience with scripting tools or advanced data analysis software is beneficial for test data processing and engineering analysis. Experience in new product development and familiarity with Engineering Change Order processes. Work Environment You will work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering environment focused on developing advanced 3D visualization and guidance systems for microsurgery. Day-to-day work includes time at a computer using SolidWorks and other engineering tools, as well as hands-on activities in laboratory and prototyping areas using test equipment, fixtures, and 3D printing or other fabrication methods. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Goleta, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $48.00/hr.
