Job Description
Job Title:
Mechanical Engineering Intern —Dexterous Hand & End-Effector Design Location:
Mountain View, CA —On-site Employment Type:
Internship — immediate start, with an intern-to-full-time conversion trackPay:
$35 per hour (negotiable based on experience) About Nimo Robotics Nimo Robotics is building next-generation humanoid systems — including dexterous robotic hands and end-effectors — capable of human-level manipulation. Founded by a team of Stanford PhD alumni, we have already signed letters of intent with leading U.S. enterprise customers and are growing our engineering team to deliver. About the Role We're hiring Mechanical Engineering Interns to work at the intersection of hardware and software on the heart of our humanoid system: dexterous hands and end-effectors. This is not a shadowing internship — you'll own real design work from concept and CAD through prototyping, testing, and iteration, working directly with our founding team. The internship is designed as a pipeline to full-time: strong performers will be considered for a full-time offer at the end of the program. What You'll Do Design mechanisms and components for dexterous robotic hands and end-effectors — fingers, joints, linkages, and tendon/cable-driven transmissions Own mechatronics design: motor selection and sizing, actuator packaging, and sensor/electronics integration Own parts end to end: CAD design, rapid prototyping (3D printing, machining), assembly, and functional testing Run tolerance analysis and DFM reviews, and iterate quickly based on test results Participate in full-system testing of the robot — integration, bring-up, validation, and debugging alongside our software and controls engineers Create and maintain engineering drawings, BOMs, and test documentation Candidates with controls experience will also have the opportunity to take on robot operation work — motor/force control tuning, teleoperation, and hardware-in-the-loop testing. Minimum Qualifications Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field Strong CAD skills (SolidWorks or equivalent) Solid fundamentals in mechanism design, machine elements, and materials Demonstrated hands-on engineering experience through a prior internship or co-op, a project team (e.g., Formula SAE, robotics club), or a research lab — you've designed, built, and debugged real hardware Preferred Qualifications Experience designing robotic hands, grippers, end-effectors, or other precision electromechanical mechanisms Familiarity with tendon/cable-driven or linkage-driven mechanisms, small actuators, and gear/transmission design Controls experience: motor control, force/torque control, or teleoperation Programming skills (Python or C++); ROS experience is a plus Familiarity with GD&T, FEA, and common manufacturing processes Details Start date: as soon as possible; duration is flexible, with the intent to convert to a full-time roleSchedule:
full-time preferred; part-time (20+ hrs/week) considered for current students Intern-to-full-time track: we hire interns with the intention of converting top performers to full-time roles Work authorization: F-1 international students eligible for CPT or OPT are welcome to apply Nimo Robotics is an equal opportunity employer.
