Role Definition The Staff Metrology Engineer designs, develops, implements, and continuously improves test systems, validation methods, and manufacturing technologies to maximize calibration techniques to product quality, efficiency, and reliability measurements across Solar Turbines operations. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and resolve component-level, manufacturing, testing, and product operation issues, ensuring design acceptance and manufacturing readiness. Implement and improve testing, development, and validation techniques, processes, tooling, and machinery. Support the adoption of new technologies and process improvements using tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, LabVIEW, C#, and C++. Plan, monitor, and improve MetCal procedures and operations to enhance reliability and efficiency. Analyze data to assess machine performance, process capability, and overall system reliability. Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver solutions aligned with business objectives and customer requirements. Additional Role Scope Provide test system hardware, instrumentation, calibration, and technical support to Solar's assembly and test organizations in San Diego, DeSoto, and global facilities. Specify, design, budget, test, document, and deliver test systems for turbine engines, gas compressors, turbomachinery packages, and related components. Analyze and approve engine test and calibration data, including performance and rotor-dynamic vibration data. Provide technical leadership and support to Metrology Technicians. Define test facility requirements supporting production needs, continuous improvement initiatives, and capital projects. Utilize databases, data analysis tools, and data acquisition systems to extract and interpret test cell performance characteristics. Develop, maintain, and own metrology laboratory procedures, serving as the primary technical contact for test and measurement activities. Interface regularly with customers, Engineering, Project Management, and Operations. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline. Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, resolve complex technical problems, and make sound engineering decisions. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of metrology principles, calibration procedures, and test equipment. Exposure to wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and basic programming. Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools; Excel macros a plus. Internship or prior experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities with a strong sense of urgency. Proven initiative in quality improvement, root-cause analysis, and corrective action implementation. Ability to work independently and deliver results on time.
Summary Pay Range:
$77,264.00 - $115,896.00 Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
