Job Title:
Mechanical Design Engineer Job Description The Mechanical Design Engineer designs and modifies stainless steel products to meet customer specifications, using SolidWorks and other 3D CAD tools. This role focuses on customizing existing product lines and supporting new product development by translating customer requirements into detailed mechanical designs, coordinating with production and assembly teams, and ensuring designs align with manufacturing processes, timelines, and cost targets. Responsibilities Develop and modify mechanical designs for existing and new products based on customer specifications using SolidWorks and other 3D CAD software. Create detailed 3D models and drawings for components and assemblies, including stainless steel and sheet metal parts. Design systems and manage project scopes, including timelines, cost considerations, and implementation for both new development and product modifications. Support custom engineering projects from concept through production, including design, production support, assembly coordination, and testing activities. Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are compatible with GMP manufacturing processes for metal products, including stainless steel and sheet metal fabrication. Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOM) and labor allocations within MRP or ERP systems to support accurate planning and production. Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, and sales, to ensure that customer requirements are fully understood and met. Incorporate knowledge of sheet metal, welding, and finishing processes into designs to improve manufacturability and product quality. Support continuous improvement initiatives by refining existing designs to enhance performance, reliability, and ease of manufacture. Assist with design-related problem solving during production and assembly, providing engineering support to resolve issues efficiently. Contribute to product development activities within the engineering design group, particularly for appliances and equipment used in food service and material handling applications. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience with 3D modeling using CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Pro/E, or Creo, including co-op or internship experience. Proficiency in mechanical design and 3D modeling for metal products, particularly stainless steel and sheet metal components. Ability to design systems and manage project scopes, including timelines, cost, support, and implementation for new development and product modifications. Experience supporting custom engineering, including design, production, assembly, and testing of mechanical products. Familiarity with GMP manufacturing processes for metal products, stainless steel, and sheet metal. Experience creating and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOM) and labor allocations within an MRP or ERP system. Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including sheet metal fabrication, welding, and finishing. Strong skills in mechanical design engineering within a production and manufacturing environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate or bachelor's degree in CAD, Design, or Engineering is preferred but not required. Experience with appliances or equipment that contain gas, electric, or refrigeration systems is a plus. Background in designing products for food service, material handling, or similar industrial applications is beneficial. Ability to work effectively within a large, team-oriented engineering design group. Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with engineering, production, and sales teams. Work Environment This role is based at a large manufacturing facility that produces stainless steel products for the food service industry, material handling, and supermarkets. The plant manufactures a wide range of products such as lunchroom tables, grills, fryers, ovens, refrigerators, and shelving for restaurants, with complete assembly of products performed on site. The location also serves as the headquarters, housing functions such as human resources, sales, accounting, and executive leadership. The Mechanical Design Engineer will work within the Engineering Design Group, which consists of approximately 25 team members, including those focused on sales order engineering and product development. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The environment is team-oriented, with a large workforce and many long-tenured employees, and offers eligibility for overtime. The role involves close interaction with production and assembly areas, working with stainless steel and sheet metal manufacturing processes in a professional industrial setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Clayton, DE. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.85 - $55.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
