The Associate Engineer develops foundational engineering knowledge and skills within a designated functional area by performing routine engineering assignments using established analysis methods, procedures, and techniques. Responsibilities may include conducting engineering investigations, performing analysis and design tasks, preparing portions of project documents, and supporting project plan review and field inspections for small to medium projects or assigned components of larger, more complex efforts. Work initially receives close supervision to ensure sound technical and professional judgment, with increasing independence expected as experience is gained. The role requires coordination with internal stakeholders as needed. The Associate Engineer may also assist the manager in preparing schedule updates, budget information, and communications related to departmental projects and assignments. Key Responsibilities Assess and recommend system design improvements, expansions, or replacements under the direction and review of a lead engineer or manager. Serve as a project manager for small to moderately complex utility projects through various phases, including initial scoping, funding approvals, site selection, design participation, equipment specification and procurement, construction coordination, cost and budget management, system checks, startup, and final closeout. Assist in preparing Requests for Proposal (RFPs), reviewing vendor responses, and developing bid award recommendations consistent with JEA procurement guidelines and policies. Participate in and support complex field inspections, including testing activities. Document and report non‑conformance with design plans and specifications. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders regarding engineering requirements and project activities. Monitor assigned utility system performance, including coordination with operators, investigating system failures, recommending corrective actions and improvement opportunities, and providing training as needed. Prepare technical, financial, or process‑related analytical reports. Develop written and verbal project status reports, including updates on schedules and financial performance. Perform other job‑related work as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS OPEN REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (EAC/ABET). A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology is not acceptable unless accompanied by a master's degree in one of the approved engineering disciplines listed below.

Note:

Applicants who are actively enrolled in their final year of an ABET‑accredited Mechanical Engineering degree program will be considered eligible to participate in the testing/interview process and, if successful, may be placed on the eligibility list. Proof of successful degree completion must be presented prior to hire.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION A

valid driver's license is required prior to employment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Note:

The minimum salary for this position is $76,460.80. The starting salary for professional positions will be determined based on education, licenses, certifications, skills, experience, and alignment with salaries for similar roles within the organization. The starting hourly rate for positions with a pay step plan will be Step 1 of the corresponding union contract.
