This position will be responsible for developing mechanical designs from initial concept through manufacturing, testing, and implementation. The Mechanical Design Engineer will work closely with manufacturing, production, suppliers, and other members of the engineering team to develop new products and systems, improve existing designs, solve technical problems, and ensure designs are practical and efficient to manufacture. Pay & Benefits Expected salary: Approximately $80,000 per year and up, based on experience and qualifications. Compensation may vary for candidates with different levels of experience . 100% company-paid employee health insurance 401(k) retirement plan Paid Time Off (PTO) program Paid holidays Climate-controlled manufacturing facility Stable, established Wichita manufacturing company Opportunity to work on a wide variety of mechanical products, systems, and applications across multiple industries Responsibilities Develop innovative mechanical designs for products, machinery, components, and systems, including 3D models, technical drawings, and engineering specifications Develop designs from initial concept through detailed design, manufacturing, testing, and implementation Perform mechanical analysis and engineering calculations to evaluate design performance and requirements Create, evaluate, and analyze prototypes of mechanical components and systems Develop and perform physical testing of engineering prototypes to validate design concepts and performance Analyze test results and use findings to refine and improve designs Identify design improvements and optimize products for cost, manufacturability, efficiency, performance, and reliability Incorporate feedback from manufacturing, assembly, customers, and field performance into new and existing designs Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) Work directly with manufacturing and shop-floor personnel to ensure designs can be efficiently and reliably produced Troubleshoot mechanical and manufacturing issues and develop practical engineering solutions Coordinate with suppliers and outside vendors regarding components, materials, manufacturing processes, and technical requirements Maintain accurate engineering documentation and design revisions Manage multiple engineering projects and priorities while meeting established deadlines Qualifications & Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field 5+ years of mechanical engineering/design experience Proficiency with 3D CAD software; CATIA experience preferred Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes Ability to perform complex engineering calculations and mechanical analysis Ability to interpret simulation and analysis results and apply findings to engineering designs Strong technical problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities Experience developing and evaluating mechanical prototypes Experience with engineering drawings, tolerances, specifications, and Bills of Materials Understanding of design for manufacturability and the ability to consider manufacturing processes during product development Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical information Ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, production, suppliers, and customers Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, coordinate priorities, and meet deadlines About the Work Carlson manufactures products and components for the aerospace, industrial, energy, and wind industries. Our engineering team works directly with manufacturing, allowing engineers to take designs beyond CAD and see them manufactured, assembled, tested, and put into service. Our manufacturing capabilities include CNC milling and turning, VTL machining, gear shaping and hobbing, grinding, conventional machining, mechanical assembly, and other manufacturing processes. The position includes a mix of new product development, existing product improvement, reverse engineering, troubleshooting, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing support.
