Mechanical Project Engineer

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to support the installation, startup, conversion, and debug of manufacturing equipment and automated systems. This is a highly hands-on role , with the majority of time spent on the manufacturing floor working directly with equipment, technicians, maintenance teams, contractors, and vendors. The engineer will support projects from planning through installation and final turnover to operations, including mechanical modifications, troubleshooting, equipment documentation, and vendor coordination.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide mechanical engineering support for the construction, installation, startup, conversion, and debug of manufacturing equipment and automated systems. Work hands-on with equipment using hand tools, measurement instruments, and mechanical alignment devices. Lead and provide technical direction to engineering technicians, maintenance personnel, contractors, and outside trades during equipment installation and modifications. Troubleshoot equipment and process issues and implement mechanical solutions to resolve installation, fit, function, and performance issues. Redesign or modify mechanical components to resolve equipment interference, improve installation efficiency, or correct design issues. Coordinate with system integrators, machine builders, and equipment vendors to deliver integrated manufacturing systems. Review and modify engineering drawings, equipment specifications, machine part lists, installation checklists, and related documentation. Procure and expedite materials and components needed for equipment installation and modifications. Evaluate existing equipment for condition, fit, function, and compatibility with new installation plans. Collaborate with Mechanical, Process, Electrical, IT, Operations, and other engineering teams. Support safety planning and ensure installation activities meet site and project safety requirements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS BS

in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. 3+ years of manufacturing experience working with manufacturing equipment. Hands-on experience with industrial equipment in a manufacturing, construction, installation, or similar environment. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, mechanical schematics, and P&IDs . Understanding of process variables including flow, temperature, rate, pressure, and level. Knowledge of mechanical drive trains, electrical actuators, and pneumatic actuators. Ability to troubleshoot equipment and determine practical mechanical solutions. Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a team-oriented environment with a strong focus on safety.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with AutoCAD, Inventor, and MS Project . Project engineering or project management experience, including scope, budgets, and schedules. Experience with equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and debug. Experience coordinating vendors, contractors, maintenance personnel, or skilled trades. Manufacturing floor or construction-site experience. Knowledge of optical fiber manufacturing processes . Strong technical presentation and communication skills. TRAVEL Travel will be required to manufacturing sites throughout North Carolina, including Concord, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Newton, and Wilmington . Travel may range from several days to several weeks during project initiation and may become full-time during equipment deployment. Project phases typically range from 3-9 months and may extend beyond one year.

Pay:

$45.00 - $56.00 per hour
