We're looking for a Mechanical Designer with hands-on experience in the live entertainment industry to design the mechanical systems that bring shows to life — automation, rigging, staging, and special effects. You'll be a core part of the team that turns concepts into physical, functioning systems.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Design mechanical systems for stage automation, rigging, and special effects Take on projects at any stage of maturity — from a blank sheet to a design that's already 75% developed — and carry them forward from concept to completion Rapidly iterate on designs based on defined scope or client requests Create detailed CAD models, assemblies, and drawings (Autodesk Inventor) to support concept development, client reviews, fabrication drawings, and as-builts Select and integrate mechanical components — motors, actuators, gearing, bearings, fasteners, structural elements — appropriate for prototype and production intent Use rapid fabrication methods (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, hand tools) to build and refine prototypes in-house Understand and apply relevant codes and standards (ANSI E1.6, ESTA/PLASA, OSHA, local AHJ requirements) when required
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Design or Engineering (or equivalent hands-on experience) Strong Autodesk Inventor skills — must be able to work productively with minimal ramp-up — and ability to create design submittal and fabrication drawings Working knowledge of entertainment rigging and automation standards (ANSI E1.6-1, E1.21, E1.43, etc.) Understanding of motion control, servo/motor selection, and mechanical power transmission Ability to produce clear, accurate fabrication drawings the shop can build from Comfortable iterating quickly, being adaptable, and able to confidently respond to changes in scope with a positive attitude. Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with in-house fabrication teams and third-party vendors Nice to have: 3+ years of engineering experience within live entertainment, theme parks, touring production, or themed entertainment Hand calculations and basic FEA/simulation experience to validate structural, thermal, or kinematic performance Ability to read and produce structural calculations and engineering drawings Hands-on fabrication experience: 3D printing, machining, sheet metal, or general shop skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Comfortable moving between desk-based CAD work and hands-on prototype building Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and work on your feet in a shop or venue environment for extended periods Able to travel periodically for site walkthroughs, installations, and on-site support as needed
