Job Description

Description Steinway is looking for experienced Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineers who has experience building musical instruments or woodworking, to lead the design, production, and refinement of our instruments. This hands-on role combines mechanical and manufacturing engineering expertise with deep knowledge of piano craftsmanship, finishing, acoustics, and process optimization (Lean/DFMA). The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers and technicians, drive continuous improvement and innovation, and ensure every piano meets the highest standards of quality, performance, and acoustic excellence while advancing the legacy of our instruments. This role currently has two openings.
Main Responsibilities:
  • Lead engineering and manufacturing initiatives across piano design, materials, assembly, finishing, and acoustic performance
  • Test and analyze components, assemblies, and materials to ensure exceptional quality and sound
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshoot complex issues across production, quality, and engineering teams
  • Apply Lean, DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly), and other process optimization principles to improve efficiency, quality, and manufacturability
  • Maintain and manage detailed engineering documentation, parts models, construction orders, and PLM records
  • Mentor engineers and technicians, fostering best practices, multi-disciplinary knowledge, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation, balancing respect for legacy systems with modern engineering approaches Requirements Qualifications, education and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or related Engineering field required; advanced degrees a plus
  • 5-10+ years of progressive engineering experience in precision manufacturing, musical instruments, or woodworking-intensive industries required.
  • Proven expertise in piano engineering, piano technician work, and/or woodworking/finishing
  • Hands-on problem-solving experience, including troubleshooting complex systems, materials, and processes
  • Familiarity with CAD modeling tools (NX, SolidWorks, or similar) and PLM software
  • Knowledge of piano acoustics or audio system performance highly desirable
  • Strong project management and planning skills, with the ability to organize, prioritize, and deliver complex projects
  • Strong ability to work independently, provide technical leadership, and mentor colleagues
  • Demonstrated understanding of wood technology, finishing techniques, and piano component interactions Experience applying Lean principles, DFMA, or other process improvement methodologies The estimated annualized base salary range for this role is $85,000-$110,000.
Compensation will vary based on skills and experience. New employees are eligible to participate in a robust benefits package on the first day including medical, dental, vision, FSAs, generous 401k contribution, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, professional development, and more.
