] Position Summary At Metal Powder Works, we have invented an entirely new way to make metal powders and are now commercializing it. Our DirectPowder™ technology produces metal powders for use in manufacturing processes such as Powder Metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing. The Mechanical Engineer I is an entry-level engineering contributor who supports the design, build, testing, and implementation of custom machinery and automated equipment for manufacturing environments. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, this role creates mechanical designs and documentation, participates in machine assembly and troubleshooting, and helps improve equipment performance, reliability, manufacturability, and safety. The position is well suited for an engineer who combines sound engineering fundamentals with a practical, hands-on approach. Key Responsibilities Machine Design & Engineering
  • Support the mechanical design of custom machinery, automated systems, and precision equipment using 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred; Creo, Inventor, or similar software also applicable).
  • Create and revise mechanical designs for frames, mechanisms, guards, tooling, brackets, fixtures, and interfaces with controls and automation components.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyses under guidance, including tolerance reviews, basic load and stress calculations, motion studies, and component selection.
  • Prepare and maintain manufacturing drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), assembly documentation, specifications, and engineering change records. Machine Build, Assembly & Integration
  • Assist with mechanical assembly, alignment, adjustment, and functional checks of custom machinery and equipment.
  • Work closely with machinists, fabricators, assembly technicians, controls engineers, and other team members to support design intent and build quality.
  • Participate in machine runoff, debugging, mechanical tuning, testing, and acceptance activities in-house and, as assigned, at customer sites. Manufacturing & Production Support
  • Provide day-to-day engineering support for machine builds, installations, upgrades, retrofits, and performance improvements.
  • Assist with root-cause investigations involving mechanical issues, component failures, assembly challenges, and equipment performance deviations.
  • Identify and implement practical improvements that enhance equipment reliability, throughput, safety, manufacturability, and maintainability. Project Execution & Coordination
  • Complete assigned engineering tasks and small design projects from concept through fabrication, assembly, testing, and release.
  • Develop task requirements, design inputs, material and component needs, and estimated completion dates with guidance from project leads.
  • Coordinate assigned work with machining, welding, controls, purchasing, quality, and assembly personnel.
  • Communicate with suppliers and vendors to obtain technical information, quotations, and component documentation as assigned. Technical Development & Documentation
  • Apply established mechanical design practices, engineering standards, and documentation methods while developing technical judgment.
  • Seek and incorporate feedback from senior engineers, technicians, and manufacturing personnel during design and build activities.
  • Maintain organized engineering records and contribute to standard designs, lessons learned, and continuous improvement activities.
Qualifications Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, machine building, automated equipment, manufacturing engineering, internships, co-op assignments, or related project work.
  • Working proficiency with 3D CAD modeling and mechanical drafting; SolidWorks experience is preferred.
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude demonstrated through employment, internships, co-op work, academic projects, personal projects, or equipment assembly and troubleshooting.
Skills & Competencies:
  • Exposure to automation, robotics, motion control, pneumatics, hydraulics, sensors, or mechatronic systems is preferred.
  • Foundational knowledge of
GD&T, DFM/DFA
principles, engineering materials, manufacturing processes, and industrial safety practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with machining, fabrication, assembly, quality, and purchasing teams during prototype and equipment-build activities.
  • Familiarity with basic FEA, motion simulation, tolerance analysis, or machine-dynamics tools is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn structured troubleshooting methods.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering and shop teams.
  • Initiative, accountability, attention to detail, and openness to coaching and technical feedback.
  • Ability to produce practical, manufacturable designs with a hands-on mindset.
  • Ability to organize multiple assignments, communicate priorities, and meet deadlines in a build-focused environment.
