The Irwin Car and Equipment Engineering Team designs custom material handling solutions for a broad variety of customers. The Mechanical Engineer is a vital member of our team and contributes in an organizational and technical capacity to satisfying our customers and meeting our own strategic goals. The broad skill set required in this role allows for significant flexibility in shifting focus between projects and disciplines as changing circumstances dictate. This position reports to the Vice President of Engineering. Job Responsibilities Designs complex, heavy-duty equipment for specialized industrial material handling applications. Engage with customers to execute and develop a custom solution to fit their needs and expectations. Work with our engineering team to design, engineer, and process all deliverables in a professional and punctual manner. Populate bills of materials of the equipment with the sourcing and purchasing team. Coordinate and manage the design of the equipment throughout the duration of the project. Design and complete projects on time and on budget. Documents engineering tests, records, organizes, and presents data to our team. Occasional programming for motors and automated equipment. Develop Operation and Maintenance Manuals of large projects. Balance and prioritize multiple projects in the best interest of the company. Occasional domestic travel is required. Job Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience. Ten years of experience in a related engineering field. A thorough understanding of mechanical and electrical principles as they relate to the design of industrial equipment and machinery. Familiarity with rail and rubber tire wheel assemblies, power transmission components, motors, and industrial electronics hardware and controls. Ability to correctly size electrical components in conjunction with mechanical components. Solid 3D Modeling skills of parts, assemblies, and drawings Inventor (Preferred) Familiar with a wide range of manufacturing processes including machining, welding, fabrication, and mechanical assembly. Ability to design complex systems that require high tolerance and precise fits. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems which includes power transmission, hydraulics, instrumentation, and PLC controls. Ability to draw, read, and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, weld maps, and machine control documentation. Ability to work with electrical and programming teams and review electrical schematics. Can approach a technical problem with a methodical problem-solving plan and execute. Excellent technical communication skills. Ability to plan and complete multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to communicate and work effectively across different departments and personalities while influencing others and building positive relationships.
