Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to assist our Technical Service team with drafting and designing customer projects. The Project Engineer is responsible for designing, drafting, and supporting engineered steelmaking furnace products from initial concept through manufacturing and installation. This role works closely with Technical Sales, Production, and the customer to prepare drawings, estimates, calculations, and technical documentation while supporting project execution. The ideal candidate brings strong mechanical design, drafting, analytical, and communication skills with experience creating proposals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Create, revise, check, and maintain engineering drawings and files using AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, INVENTOR, and manual drafting techniques. Manage engineering projects from drafting initial drawings through manufacture, including performing and reviewing engineering calculations. Participate in customer meetings or calls, prepare technical recommendations, and proposals to meet customer needs. Communicate project updates to customers throughout the process and foster long-term partnerships by exceeding expectations in quality, reliability, and performance. Travel to customer sites to define the scope of the project, provide technical support, and assist in product installation and commissioning. Work closely with the Technical Sales and Production teams throughout the sales and manufacturing process. Follow corporate and Engineering Department procedures while maintaining technical knowledge through training and continuous education.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred (or equivalent hands-on experience) 3-5 years of related experience in mechanical engineering or mechanical drafting, preferably within a manufacturing or steel company. Comprehensive knowledge of ERP systems (e.g. Epicor) to create BOMs, routings, and part numbers. Proficiency in using AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop, INVENTOR, and modeling software to generate mechanical drawings. Ability to perform Engineering analysis including strength of materials, stress analysis, thermal analysis, and flow analysis Understanding of metal foundry operations, procedures, and welding techniques including TIG, MIG, SMAW, and Flux-Core Knowledge of Design Codes and Industry Standards - ASME / AISE / AISC / DIN Ability to communicate cross departmentally and with customers Valid driver's license and ability travel (approx. 20%)
