Position Overview Stell is seeking a seasoned Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer to support NASA design projects, including facility upgrades, infrastructure improvements, and mission-critical system modifications. This role requires an engineer who can step into active design efforts and execute independently, contributing to 30/60/90/100% design deliverables, resolving technical challenges, and coordinating directly with multidisciplinary teams and clients. The ideal candidate is a self-directed, design-focused engineer with strong experience in HVAC systems, mechanical infrastructure, and federal design standards, capable of delivering high-quality work with minimal oversight. Key Responsibilities
  • Support mechanical design development for NASA facility and infrastructure projects
  • Contribute to 30%, 60%, 90%, and final design deliverables
  • Perform HVAC load calculations, equipment sizing, and system selection
  • Develop mechanical plans, specifications, and design narratives
  • Evaluate and design central plant systems, air distribution systems, and mechanical upgrades
  • Coordinate mechanical scope with electrical, structural, and controls disciplines
  • Support temporary system designs (e.g., temporary cooling, ventilation, or system tie-ins during construction)
  • Participate in design reviews, client meetings, and technical coordination sessions
  • Conduct field/site investigations to verify existing conditions and inform design
  • Review submittals, RFIs, and contractor questions during design phases
  • Ensure compliance with NASA standards, UFCs, ASHRAE, and applicable codes
  • Support QA/QC reviews to ensure design quality and consistency Qualifications & Experience
  • U.S. Citizenship (Required)
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5-10 years of mechanical engineering design experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting federal design projects (NASA, DoD, USACE, or similar)
  • Strong background in HVAC system design and building mechanical systems
  • Experience with design deliverables at multiple stages (30-100%)
  • Proficiency with Excel and MS Project
  • Experience reviewing and coordinating RFIs, submittals, and design comments
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; EIT required; PE preferred but not required
