Mechanical Engineer Valkim Technologies, LLC San Antonio, TX Job Details Full-time From $60,000 a year 20 hours ago Qualifications Fabrication On-site technical support Project engineering Content creation for technical audiences 3D modeling software Machine troubleshooting Mechanical assembly drawings GD&T Industrial equipment troubleshooting 3D modeling for product design Machining System testing 3D printing FEA 3D modeling Technical writing experience within technology Design of individual components Field engineering Mechanical troubleshooting Product design documentation Parts modeling Full Job Description Design equipment that goes where people should not have to. Valkim Technologies develops robotic inspection solutions that help remove people from hazardous, confined, and elevated work environments. Our work combines mechanical design, pneumatic systems, inspection technologies, and practical field experience to address challenges in industrial and critical-infrastructure inspection. We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support the development, improvement, and manufacturing readiness of our robotic platforms, including our PneuBot pneumatic inspection system. You will help turn concepts and customer requirements into reliable mechanical assemblies—from initial calculations and CAD models through fabrication, assembly, testing, and field-ready documentation. This is a practical product-development role within a small, growing company. The right candidate enjoys working both at a computer and alongside the hardware, takes ownership of assigned work, and understands that a successful design must be manufacturable, serviceable, and dependable—not simply look complete in CAD. Responsibilities Design and improve robotic hardware. Develop mechanical components and assemblies for crawler platforms, drivetrains, frames, pneumatic mechanisms, inspection-payload mounts, and related equipment. Evaluate component selection, packaging, weight, access, and serviceability. Create manufacturing-ready engineering documentation. Produce and maintain accurate 3D models, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of materials, component specifications, and assembly instructions. Apply appropriate GD&T, fits, tolerances, materials, and finishes. Build, assemble, and troubleshoot prototypes. Participate directly in prototype fabrication, component fit-up, mechanical assembly, and bench testing. Identify interference, alignment, wear, and assembly issues, then update the design and documentation to reflect verified improvements. Perform practical engineering analysis. Evaluate loads, torque, speed, gear ratios, shaft and bearing selection, fastener requirements, pneumatic performance, and tolerance stack-ups. Use engineering calculations and simulation tools, where appropriate, to support design decisions. Plan and document testing. Develop test procedures and acceptance criteria, record results, investigate mechanical failures, and verify corrective actions. Assess performance against intended operating conditions rather than relying solely on design assumptions. Support fabrication and manufacturing readiness. Work with suppliers and fabrication partners to obtain components, resolve drawing questions, evaluate substitutions, and improve manufacturability, assembly efficiency, cost, and repeatability. Collaborate on system integration and deployment readiness. Work directly with the Founder/CTO, engineering colleagues, and deployment partners to integrate mechanical systems with cameras, inspection sensors, controls, and tether arrangements. Translate field observations into actionable design improvements. Maintain project ownership and configuration control. Track assigned tasks, communicate progress and obstacles early, and support project milestones. Maintain organized engineering records, revision histories, and as-built documentation using company-approved systems and established review procedures. Required Qualifications A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent directly relevant mechanical design and product-development experience. Proficiency in parametric 3D CAD software, such as SolidWorks, Creo, or an equivalent platform, including assembly modeling and detailed manufacturing drawings. Demonstrated ability to translate a mechanical design into physical hardware, with practical understanding of machining, fabrication, additive manufacturing, component selection, and assembly processes. Working knowledge of machine design, materials, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and mechanical troubleshooting, along with the ability to create and maintain accurate bills of materials and technical documentation. Strong organizational and communication skills, including the ability to manage assigned priorities, ask questions when requirements are unclear, document decisions, and follow through on commitments. Ability and willingness to work on-site and participate directly in assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and equipment preparation—not solely CAD modeling. Preferred Experience Experience with robotic crawlers, pneumatic systems, compact drivetrains, gears, shafts, bearings, or rugged industrial equipment is especially valuable. Other relevant experience includes design for manufacturing and assembly, inspection-sensor integration, finite element analysis, structured root cause analysis, and transitioning prototypes into repeatable builds. Familiarity with hazardous-environment design considerations, ATEX/IECEx requirements, nondestructive testing, or commercial and government-funded engineering projects is beneficial but not required. Candidates do not need experience in every preferred area. Working Environment and Expectations This position is based at our San Antonio facility because the work requires direct access to robotic systems, components, tools, and test equipment. Responsibilities will include a combination of CAD design, engineering documentation, hands-on assembly, and testing. As a small company, we value initiative, adaptability, and respectful collaboration. Project needs may evolve as testing and customer feedback identify new requirements. Engineers are expected to communicate changes, obtain appropriate approvals, and keep drawings and build records aligned with the actual hardware. Engineering work must be performed on company-approved equipment, with files maintained in designated company systems. Adherence to confidentiality, intellectual-property protection, revision control, and established data-management procedures is an essential part of the role. Why Join Valkim? Your work will directly influence equipment intended to reduce human exposure to hazardous inspection tasks. You will have meaningful involvement across the product-development process, work closely with the company's technical leadership, and see how your engineering decisions perform beyond the computer screen. We are looking for someone who takes pride in building practical solutions, learning from testing, and leaving behind clear documentation that allows others to manufacture, assemble, and maintain the product successfully. How to Apply Submit your résumé and a brief description of a mechanical project you helped design, build, and test , explaining your specific contribution and the outcome. Nonconfidential examples of CAD assemblies, manufacturing drawings, or completed hardware are encouraged. Please do not submit proprietary materials belonging to another employer or client.
