Job Description
About the Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Process Equipment Design Engineer to join a growing OEM manufacturer of custom industrial process equipment. This role is ideal for a hands-on mechanical engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and seeing designs move from concept through fabrication, testing, and startup. You will play a key role in designing and improving custom industrial equipment used in demanding manufacturing and processing environments, while collaborating closely with engineering, manufacturing, vendors, and customers to develop practical, high-performance solutions. Key Responsibilities Equipment Design & Engineering Design custom industrial process equipment and mechanical systems using SolidWorks and other 3D CAD tools Create detailed assemblies, fabrication drawings, machining prints, and bills of materials Perform engineering calculations related to horsepower requirements, torque, shaft loading, bearings, drives, and rotating equipment performance Design mechanical systems including shafts, bearings, gearboxes, couplings, chain drives, seals, and power transmission components Develop manufacturing-ready drawings including GD&T, tolerances, weldment details, and assembly requirements Support redesign, modernization, and reverse engineering projects for existing equipment Assist with equipment selection and configuration based on customer applications Work closely with fabrication and assembly teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and serviceable Product Testing & Troubleshooting Develop and support testing procedures for industrial process equipment Participate in equipment assembly reviews, pilot testing, troubleshooting, and startup activities Provide hands-on support during fabrication, assembly, and commissioning Analyze equipment performance and recommend improvements for reliability, throughput, efficiency, and maintainability Support prototype development and continuous product improvement initiatives Continuous Improvement Identify opportunities to improve equipment performance and manufacturing efficiency Standardize components and design practices where appropriate Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities Support new product development and innovation efforts Project Coordination & Customer Support Collaborate with customers, vendors, manufacturing teams, and internal stakeholders Provide technical support to sales and applications teams Coordinate with suppliers on fabricated and purchased components Support equipment commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities Occasional travel to customer and vendor sites as needed Qualifications Required Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent industry experience 5+ years of experience designing industrial machinery, rotating equipment, or custom OEM equipment Proficiency with SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD Strong understanding of rotating equipment and power transmission systems including: Bearings Shafts Gearboxes Couplings Seals Drive systems Experience with weldments, structural steel, fabricated machinery, and manufacturing environments Strong knowledge of GD&T, tolerances, fabrication drawings, and machining prints Understanding of machining, fabrication, assembly, and design for manufacturability principles Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills Preferred Experience with industrial mixers, blenders, mills, dryers, or bulk material handling equipment Experience supporting fabrication, assembly, testing, and equipment startup Familiarity with vacuum systems, thermal transfer systems, sealing arrangements, or inert gas systems Exposure to industrial controls and automation ASME code or pressure vessel experience
