Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Mechanical Drafter creates and maintains accurate production drawings, models, bills of materials, and related engineering documentation for manufactured components and assemblies. This role converts engineering concepts, sketches, specifications, and change requests into clear drawings that support purchasing, machining, fabrication, assembly, inspection, and customer requirements. Working closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Purchasing, and production personnel, the Mechanical Drafter applies company standards, dimensional practices, and document controls to release practical, manufacturable designs and keep technical records current.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Technical Drawings and Models:
Prepare and revise detailed part, assembly, and installation drawings using company-approved CAD software.
Dimensions and Specifications:
Apply dimensions, tolerances, notes, materials, finishes, and symbols that clearly define manufacturing and inspection requirements.
Bills of Materials and Records:
Create and maintain accurate bills of materials, part numbers, revisions, and drawing records in the document-control and ERP systems.
Design Support and Collaboration:
Translate engineering direction and shop-floor feedback into controlled drawing updates and practical documentation.
Quality and Release Control:
Check drawings for completeness, consistency, manufacturability, and compliance before routing them for review and release.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Drafting and CAD Documentation Create accurate 2D drawings and 3D models for mechanical parts, fittings, assemblies, tooling, fixtures, and related products. Convert sketches, marked-up drawings, legacy files, measurements, and engineering instructions into controlled technical drawings. Prepare orthographic views, sections, details, exploded views, and assembly layouts that clearly communicate design intent. Apply dimensions, tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, surface-finish symbols, material specifications, and manufacturing notes. Revise existing drawings and models while preserving design history, file relationships, and revision traceability. Engineering Change and Document Control Process approved engineering change requests and update affected drawings, models, bills of materials, specifications, and supporting records. Assign or maintain drawing numbers, part numbers, revision levels, titles, and file names according to company standards. Route drawings for technical review and approval, incorporate reviewer comments, and release only authorized revisions. Archive superseded documents and help ensure production teams use the current approved information. Manufacturing and Product Support Work with engineers, machinists, assemblers, inspectors, and suppliers to resolve drawing questions and clarify technical requirements. Review designs for manufacturability, assembly access, standard components, material availability, and practical production methods. Create or update bills of materials, item records, routings, and drawing links in the ERP or product data system as assigned. Support prototype builds, first-article inspections, fit checks, and production troubleshooting by providing timely drawing updates. Drawing Quality and Standards Check dimensions, tolerances, scales, units, notes, references, and bill-of-material callouts before submitting work for approval. Follow applicable company drafting practices and relevant ASME drawing and dimensioning standards. Identify conflicts, missing information, and unclear requirements; obtain direction before releasing drawings. Maintain reusable templates, symbols, title blocks, standard details, and drafting procedures as assigned. Coordination and General Support Prioritize drafting requests with the Engineering Manager and communicate schedule, status, questions, and constraints. Participate in design reviews, continuous-improvement activities, and corrective actions involving drawings or specifications. Protect confidential product information and follow company safety, quality, and records-management requirements. Perform other related drafting, documentation, or engineering-support duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate degree, technical diploma, or certificate in mechanical drafting, CAD, mechanical design, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered. Two or more years of mechanical drafting experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or engineering environment. Proficiency creating and revising 2D mechanical drawings and 3D part and assembly models in professional CAD software. Working knowledge of standard drafting practices, dimensioning, tolerancing, drawing scales, section views, and revision control. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and manufacturing documentation. Strong attention to detail and the ability to check work for accuracy, completeness, and consistency. Ability to organize multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and communicate questions before they affect release schedules. Ability to collaborate professionally with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Purchasing, suppliers, and production personnel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or comparable mechanical CAD software. Working knowledge of
ASME Y14
drawing practices and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing under
ASME Y14.5.
Experience drafting machined components, hydraulic or fluid-power products, fittings, manifolds, valves, or related assemblies. Experience with sheet metal, weldments, castings, forgings, plastics, or production tooling. Experience maintaining bills of materials, item masters, engineering changes, and drawing attachments in an ERP, PDM, or PLM system. Familiarity with manufacturing processes, measurement tools, first-article inspection, and design for manufacturability.
TECHNICAL AND CORE COMPETENCIES
Mechanical Drafting:
Creates clear, complete drawings that communicate design and manufacturing requirements.
CAD Modeling:
Builds and revises accurate parts, assemblies, views, and related drawing files.
Dimensioning and Tolerancing:
Applies dimensions, fits, tolerances, symbols, and notes consistently.
Document Control:
Maintains part numbers, revisions, approvals, and controlled technical records.
Manufacturing Knowledge:
Understands common machining, fabrication, assembly, and inspection considerations.
Quality Focus:
Checks details, identifies conflicts, and corrects issues before release.
Problem Solving:
Clarifies incomplete requirements and develops practical drafting solutions.
Communication and Organization:
Balances priorities and communicates technical information clearly.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed primarily in an office and engineering environment with frequent computer and CAD use. Regular interaction with manufacturing, warehouse, quality, and inspection areas may require safety glasses, hearing protection, safety footwear, or other required personal protective equipment. Must be able to sit or stand, use a keyboard and pointing device, review detailed drawings, communicate, and concentrate for extended periods. May occasionally measure parts, access production areas, and lift or move drawing sets, samples, or components weighing up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Produce accurate, complete drawings and models that meet approved requirements and release schedules. Maintain consistent dimensions, tolerances, notes, part numbers, revision levels, and bills of materials. Respond promptly to drawing questions and incorporate approved changes without creating uncontrolled versions. Reduce avoidable production delays, rework, and inspection questions caused by incomplete or unclear documentation. Maintain organized CAD files and current drawing records that authorized users can locate and trust. Contribute practical ideas that improve drafting standards, manufacturability, document control, and workflow efficiency.
