100% In-Person Position Summary Bentley Mission Critical is seeking an experienced Design Quality Manager - DFM & Drawing Standards to serve as the final quality gate between Engineering and Manufacturing. This position is responsible for reviewing structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings before they are released to manufacturing.
The objective is simple:
Manufacturing should not be finding design and drawing errors on the shop floor. This individual must understand Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and be able to look beyond whether a drawing is technically complete. The Design Quality Manager must determine whether what has been designed can actually be fabricated, assembled, integrated, tested, installed, and serviced efficiently and correctly. This is a hands-on drawing review and design-quality position requiring close interaction with Engineering, Project Management, Quality, and Manufacturing. Primary Responsibilities The Design Quality Manager will own the drawing quality-control process prior to release for manufacturing.
Responsibilities include:
Perform detailed quality reviews of structural, mechanical, and electrical drawing packages . Establish and enforce a formal drawing review and release process. Verify drawings are complete, coordinated, accurate, and manufacturable before release. Identify design conflicts, missing information, dimensional errors, and constructability issues. Ensure drawings comply with company drafting and engineering standards. Review drawings from a Design for Manufacturing (DFM) perspective. Verify that different engineering disciplines are properly coordinated. Identify structural, mechanical, and electrical clashes before they reach production. Verify drawing details are consistent between plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules, and BOMs. Verify dimensions, tolerances, materials, quantities, connection details, and specifications. Ensure revision control is properly maintained. Prevent obsolete or superseded drawings from reaching manufacturing. Review redlines and manufacturing feedback and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into future designs. Track recurring engineering and drawing errors and work with Engineering leadership to eliminate root causes. Develop drawing-quality checklists and standardized review procedures. Establish measurable drawing-quality KPIs. Participate in design reviews, production meetings, and lessons-learned reviews. Work directly with Manufacturing to understand fabrication and assembly constraints. Provide feedback to Engineering on opportunities for standardization and simplification. Promote repeatable designs and reduce unnecessary engineering variation. Support continuous improvement of Bentley's engineering and manufacturing processes. Structural Drawing Review The Design Quality Manager must be capable of reviewing structural and fabrication drawings for items including: Structural steel frames HSS and structural shapes Base frames and skids Platforms and equipment supports Welded and bolted assemblies Connection details Hole locations and patterns Plate thicknesses and material specifications Weld symbols and weld requirements Dimensions and tolerances Assembly and fabrication sequencing Equipment mounting provisions Lifting and handling considerations Field connection requirements The focus is not to replace the Structural Engineer of Record, but to ensure the design information provided to Manufacturing is complete, coordinated, understandable, and manufacturable. Mechanical Drawing Review Mechanical drawing reviews may include: Chilled-water piping Process piping Stainless-steel piping Equipment layouts Pumps Heat exchangers CDUs
CRAH/CRAC
equipment Valves and instrumentation Pipe supports Equipment connections P&IDs Mechanical plans and sections Pipe routing Service and maintenance clearances The Design Quality Manager must identify potential fabrication, installation, access, routing, and coordination problems before Manufacturing begins work. Electrical Drawing Review Electrical drawing reviews may include: Electrical equipment layouts Switchgear Switchboards UPS systems Battery systems Transformers Distribution equipment Panelboards Busway Cable tray Conduit routing Equipment connections Electrical room layouts Single-line diagrams Control and communication interfaces The individual must be able to recognize coordination problems, missing information, equipment-access issues, routing conflicts, and inconsistencies between drawings and equipment requirements. Design for Manufacturing - DFM A major responsibility of this position is ensuring designs are optimized for manufacturing rather than simply being technically correct. The Design Quality Manager should constantly ask: Can we build it? Can we build it efficiently? Can we assemble it in the sequence shown? Can our people access the connections? Can it be tested? Can it be shipped? Can it be installed? Can it be serviced?
DFM reviews should consider:
Fabrication methods Assembly sequence Standard materials and components Tool and equipment access Welding access Electrical and mechanical installation access Material handling Lifting Shipping constraints Installation sequence Maintainability Repeatability Standardization Opportunities to reduce labor and complexity Drawing Standards This position will help establish and enforce Bentley drawing standards across engineering disciplines.
Standards should address:
Drawing format and organization Required information Dimensioning practices Tolerances Material identification Weld symbols Equipment identification Tagging BOM consistency Revision control Drawing numbering Detail requirements Cross-references Notes Release status Redline incorporation A manufacturing employee should not have to guess what Engineering intended. Required Experience Candidates should have significant experience reviewing technical drawings in a manufacturing, fabrication, modular construction, industrial, or mission-critical environment. The ideal candidate will have experience with: Structural drawings Mechanical drawings Electrical drawings Fabrication drawings Shop drawings Design for Manufacturing (DFM) Drawing standards Constructability reviews Interdisciplinary coordination Manufacturing processes Quality-control processes Revision control BOMs and material requirements Engineering change management Root-cause analysis Experience with modular data centers, electrical power modules, e-houses, mechanical skids, structural fabrication, piping systems, or other complex integrated assemblies is highly desirable. What This Position Is NOT This position is not simply a CAD drafting position. It is also not intended to replace the engineers responsible for engineering calculations, code compliance, or professional engineering decisions. This individual is the quality gate between Engineering and Manufacturing. The Design Quality Manager must have enough practical experience to challenge a drawing and say: "This may work on paper, but Manufacturing cannot build it this way." Measures of Success Success will be measured by: Reduction in drawing-related manufacturing disruptions Reduction in shop-floor RFIs Reduction in drawing revisions after production begins Reduction in rework caused by engineering errors Improved first-time drawing quality Improved coordination between structural, mechanical, and electrical designs Compliance with drawing standards Improved manufacturability Faster and more predictable production Effective incorporation of manufacturing lessons learned into future designs Our Expectation At Bentley Mission Critical, Manufacturing is not the drawing quality-control department. Engineering drawings should arrive at the shop floor ready to build. The Design Quality Manager owns the process that helps make that happen. Safety First. Quality Second. On-Time Delivery Third.
