Job Description:
  • POSITION PURPOSE
  • This position is located at our Headquarters building in Bismarck, ND and is not a remote position.
  • Based on experience and education, this position will either be hired as a Mechanical Draftsperson I or II, or a Mechanical Designer I, II, III, or Senior.
  • A successful Mechanical Draftsperson will provide drafting services for engineering design needed to meet existing and future power generation, gas production, fuel supply, and power transmission facility needs.
A successful Mechanical Designer will provide design services to meet the generation and transmission needs of the Cooperative in accordance with the Cooperative's policies and procedures, industry standards, guidelines and regulations governing the Cooperative's facilities.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Mechanical Draftsperson:
  • + Create new mechanical engineering drawings and revise existing drawings as marked or requested by engineers, designers, or technicians using established engineering methods, standards, and procedures.
+ Prepare introductory-level mechanical details and layouts for engineering projects. + Revise and maintain "as-built" mechanical drawings and documentation. + Perform drawing redlines and updates under supervision. + Develop piping, equipment, fabrication, and installation drawings from sketches and marked-up drawings. + Learn and become proficient in Engineering Document Management System operations, workflows, and document control requirements. + Assist engineering staff with maintaining drawing files, standards, and project documentation. + Support field verification efforts and incorporate findings into mechanical drawings and records. + Assist with drawing conversions, updates, and modernization of legacy engineering records. + Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Mechanical Designer:
  • + Provide design services and readily comprehensible construction documents, which provide constructible and economical facilities for the Cooperative.
+ review vendor drawings by outside agencies to check conformance with project design concepts and compliance with information of contract documents. + Provide quality and accuracy checks on drawings and other technical material developed within the Engineering and Construction Division. + Provide drafting services as assigned by the Mechanical Engineering Manager. + Develop a comprehensive working knowledge with ability to interpret all applicable codes, standards, rules, and regulations within the practicing disciplines. + Utilize engineering mathematics, technical references, and established industry standards, codes, rules, regulations, etc., to accomplish assigned tasks. + Develop effective working relationships with all major departments within Basin Electric Power Cooperative headquarters and staff at operating power plants, as appropriate. + During plant outages, the incumbent may be required to provide outage support at the plant for extended periods of time. + Perform other duties as assigned.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Mechanical Draftsperson:
  • + Associate's degree in Drafting & Design Technology, Mechanical Design Technology, Engineering Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD), or an
EAC/ABET
accredited engineering program; or + High school diploma (or equivalent
GED/HSED
); and 2 years of professional drafting or design experience. + Valid driver's license. + Occasional travel required.
  • Mechanical Designer:
  • + Associate's degree in Drafting & Design Technology, Engineering Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD), or a related Construction Industry program, and 4 years of related drafting experience; or + A high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) and 6 years of related drafting experience. + A valid driver's license. + Occasional travel required.
  • PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
  • This position requires frequent sitting; and occasional standing/walking, bending/reaching, climbing, kneeling, crawling, use of keyboard/computer, pushing/pulling up to 60 pounds, and lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds.
This position also requires finger dexterity, hand coordination, good hearing, and color vision. This position occasionally works in conditions of dirt/dust, fumes, chemicals, extreme heat/cold, vibration, noise, poor ventilation, electrical risks, and confined areas. The incumbent must be respirator qualified. The incumbent is required to be clean-shaven for respirator fit testing while assigned to work on a plant site. The incumbent may have to work at heights up to 600 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with
ANSI Z359
standards, and access all areas of the plant site. The ability to operate a motor vehicle is required.
  • KEY SKILLS
  • + Working knowledge of engineering drawings including P&IDs, equipment arrangements, fabrication drawings, and piping layouts.
+ Working knowledge of Autodesk software including AutoCAD. + Ability to learn 3D modeling and plant design software utilized by the Engineering & Construction division. + Understanding of mechanical drafting principles, mechanical systems, and industrial equipment layouts. + Knowledge and understanding of engineering mathematics and drafting, and an understanding of design, fabrication, and construction processes in the applicable engineering discipline. + Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and AutoDESK software. + Excellent written and verbal communication skills. + Able to analyze data/reports and conduct research; implement recommendations; develop plans, procedures, and goals; and present information to others. + May be required to work under pressure due to conflicting priorities and deadlines.
