Job Description
Company Overview GCTS designs and manufactures advanced geotechnical and rock mechanics testing systems used by laboratories, universities, research organizations, and engineering customers around the world. We are looking for a hands-on engineer who can own final product testing, verify system performance, support quality release, and represent GCTS during customer installations and training. Position Overview This role combines engineering-level product testing, quality control, troubleshooting, and international field service. The person in this position will perform full functionality testing on GCTS systems, verify that equipment meets specifications, document issues clearly, and provide the final quality release before products are shipped to customers. The role also includes traveling to customer sites, including international locations, to install equipment, perform commissioning, and train users. The ideal candidate has a civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, or closely related technical background, plus the hands-on ability to work with mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and software-controlled testing systems. This is not a narrow bench technician role. We need someone who can understand how geotechnical testing systems are supposed to function, recognize when something is wrong, troubleshoot intelligently, and communicate issues clearly with engineering, production, software, and customers. Key Responsibilities
- Perform full product functionality testing on geotechnical and rock mechanics testing systems before shipment.
- Verify that completed systems meet applicable specifications, drawings, test requirements, safety expectations, and customer order requirements.
- Provide final quality release approval before products are packed and shipped.
- Operate and evaluate systems involving servo hydraulics, pneumatics, electromechanical components, sensors, data acquisition, and control software.
- Perform calibration checks, test setup verification, and functional checks across GCTS product lines.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, sensor, software, and system integration issues during final testing.
- Document test results, nonconformances, troubleshooting steps, corrective actions, and release decisions in a clear and traceable manner.
- Work with design engineers, production technicians, and software engineers to identify product issues and support Engineering Change Request or continuous-improvement activity.
- Inspect, test, and support repair evaluation for customer-returned products or systems.
- Beta test and provide practical feedback on GCTS software tools, including control software and mobile applications, as applicable.
- Travel to customer sites in the United States and abroad for equipment installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer training.
- Train customers on safe equipment operation, test setup, basic maintenance, and proper use of GCTS systems.
- Represent GCTS professionally in customer-facing situations, including installations, service visits, and technical training sessions. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related technical field; equivalent highly relevant experience may be considered for exceptional candidates.
- Engineering-level understanding of geotechnical, rock mechanics, civil materials testing, laboratory testing, or closely related test systems.
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting ability with mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, instrumentation, and software-controlled equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, assembly documentation, test procedures, and technical manuals.
- Working knowledge of sensors, data acquisition, control systems, hydraulic power systems, and basic electronics.
- Comfortable using tools and test equipment such as multimeters, pressure gauges, calibration devices, hand tools, and diagnostic software.
- Strong documentation discipline, attention to detail, and willingness to stop shipment when a system does not meet requirements.
- Professional communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to customers, engineers, technicians, and non-specialists.
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally for several days at a time for installations, commissioning, troubleshooting, and training.
- Ability to work on-site at GCTS in Tempe, Arizona. Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience performing geotechnical, rock mechanics, soil, asphalt, concrete, or civil materials laboratory testing.
- Experience with triaxial, direct shear, simple shear, consolidation, resonant column, dynamic testing, creep, permeability, or rock testing equipment.
- Experience installing, commissioning, or servicing laboratory, industrial, hydraulic, electromechanical, or scientific equipment.
- Experience training customers or users on technical equipment.
- Experience with ISO-style quality systems, nonconformance documentation, calibration records, or final inspection/release procedures.
- Familiarity with computer networks, data acquisition systems, controllers, PLCs, or test control software.
- Bilingual or multilingual communication ability is a plus, but not required. Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in an engineering, production, laboratory, and customer-site environment.
- Must be comfortable working around hydraulic power units, pressurized systems, electrical panels, tools, test frames, and laboratory equipment.
- Must be able to follow safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and work around equipment during testing, installation, and troubleshooting.
- Must be able to travel by air and work at customer sites for multiple consecutive days.
Pay:
$65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per yearBenefits:
