Job Description
The Accelerator Systems Division (ASD) provides best-in-class operation, maintenance and upgrade of the Advanced Photon Source accelerators and support users in doing outstanding science in a safe environment. The Diagnostics Group of ASD is searching for a Photon Diagnostic Scientist/Engineer who will work on various photon diagnostics for the Advanced Photon Source (APS) accelerators.
The successful candidate will:
Design, construct, commission and operate the photon beam diagnostics systems for the Advanced Photon Source accelerator systems. Provide physics and engineer support for the beam diagnostic systems for the APS accelerator complex, including X-ray Beam Position Monitors, visible and X-ray diagnostic beamlines to measure transverse and longitudinal profiles, and interceptive beam profile monitors. Collaborate with physicists and engineers associated with the photon diagnostic systems. May be required to perform other duties as assigned. Position Requirements Knowledge of the design, construction and operation of synchrotron light diagnostics, X-ray beam position diagnostics, and general accelerator beam diagnostic technology. Experience in design, development, and operating photon diagnostics or related diagnostics systems. Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork. Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Ability to utilize state-of-the-art analytic and simulation techniques in the design of accelerator diagnostics, the creation of drawings, and in the design of new beam diagnostic hardware. Familiarity with electrical/optical system troubleshooting techniques. Familiarity of one or more high-level scripting language. Knowledge of modern control systems like EPICS. Ability to work independently and with minimal direction and in a team environment. The ability to determine problem areas and recognize the need for additional expertise. This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows: RD2: Bachelors and 5+ years' experience, Masters and 3+ years' experience, PhD and 0+ years' experience, or equivalent. The expected pay range for this position is $94,486- $147,399. RD3: Bachelors and 8+ years' experience, Masters and 5+ years' experience, PhD and 4+ years' experience, or equivalent. The expected pay range for this position is $116,250
