Job Description
P&D seeks a Senior Power Systems Study Engineer to lead electrical power system analysis for commercial, industrial, government and institutional facility projects. In this role, independently perform and review short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies, develop technically sound recommendations, and deliver clear, defensible engineering reports. This role will also provide technical leadership to junior engineers, support client relationships, and help maintain the quality and consistency of the company's power system study practice. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, service-oriented team player with knowledge of power systems. Responsibilities
- Lead short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies from project kickoff through final delivery.
- Develop, validate, and maintain detailed electrical power system models using one-line diagrams, field data, equipment documentation, and utility information.
- Perform short-circuit calculations and evaluate equipment interrupting, withstand, and bracing ratings.
- Conduct protective device coordination studies involving low- and medium-voltage circuit breakers, fuses, relays, transformers, generators, motors, and other system components.
- Develop and review time-current coordination curves, relay settings, and protection recommendations.\
- Perform arc-flash hazard analyses and develop incident-energy results, working-distance recommendations, and equipment labeling information.
- Evaluate system deficiencies and recommend practical corrective actions, including protective device setting changes, equipment replacement, maintenance, and system modifications.
- Review study inputs, assumptions, calculations, models, and reports for technical accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare and approve clear technical reports describing methodology, assumptions, findings, risks, and recommended actions.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to entry-level and mid-level engineers.
- Coordinate with clients, utilities, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Lead data-collection planning and participate in field verification activities at client facilities.
- Present study findings and recommendations to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
- Support project planning, scope development, fee estimates, schedules, and resource allocation.
- Monitor project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and quality requirements.
- Contribute to proposals, client interviews, and business-development efforts.
- Maintain awareness of industry standards, software developments, and evolving power system study practices.
- Support the development and improvement of internal calculation templates, technical procedures, and quality-control standards. Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 10 years of professional experience in electrical power system analysis, design, protection, or a related field.
- Professional Engineer license, or the ability to obtain licensure within an agreed timeframe.
- Advanced proficiency with at least one major power system analysis platform, such as
ETAP, SKM
PowerTools, EasyPower, or CYME.- Strong knowledge of applicable electrical safety codes, standards, and study methodologies.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, deadlines, and client expectations.
- Ability to organize technical information and maintain attention to detail.
- Ability to mentor engineers and provide effective technical review. Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- Experience performing studies for industrial plants, utilities, data centers, healthcare facilities, campuses, or mission-critical facilities.
- Experience with medium-voltage relay coordination and protection settings.
- Familiarity with generator, motor-starting, load-flow, transient stability, harmonic, grounding, or reliability studies.
- Experience configuring or reviewing microprocessor-based protective relays.
- Knowledge of
NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, IEEE 242, IEEE 399, IEEE
551, and applicable utility or regional standards.- Experience developing proposals, scopes of work, labor estimates, and project schedules.
- Existing client relationships or demonstrated experience supporting business development.
- Experience leading technical teams or serving as the engineer of record for power system study projects.
