Senior Power Systems Engineer (Grid Operations & Planning)
Location:
Detroit Metropolitan Area, MI (Hybrid / On-site opportunities)

Long Term Contract About the Role Are you a seasoned power engineer ready to drive grid reliability and lead complex utility projects? As a Senior Power Systems Engineer , you will serve as a technical subject matter expert responsible for planning, directing, and executing critical power system operations and engineering activities. Leveraging advanced analytical techniques and real-world field insights, you will exercise decision-making authority to solve intricate grid challenges, mentor junior engineers and technical staff, and ensure operational excellence across our energy network.
Key Responsibilities Project Leadership:
Direct and manage high-impact utility projects and complex field assignments from inception to completion.
Power Flow & System Analysis:
Perform advanced steady-state power flow studies, $N-1$ contingency evaluations, and operational studies to support real-time reliability and outage planning.
Model Optimization:
Develop, evaluate, and refine system models for continuous grid improvement, providing crucial operational feedback based on real-time system measurements.
Cross-Functional Team Collaboration:
Guide and lead teams of field employees, technicians, engineers, and support personnel during technical executions and studies.
Technical Problem Solving:
Propose and execute innovative engineering solutions for complex grid constraints, thermal/voltage violations, and operational challenges. Qualifications Must-Have Qualifications (Required)
Education:
Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an accredited program.
Experience:
Minimum of 4+ years of direct engineering experience within the utility industry .
Power Flow Expertise:
Proven, hands-on experience performing power flow studies .
EMS Mastery:
Direct experience working with Energy Management Systems (EMS) , specifically including: State Estimator (SE) Contingency Analysis (CA) $N-1$ operating condition practices
Software Proficiency:
Hands-on experience with industry-standard power system modeling applications such as PSSE and/or TARA .
Model Analytics:
Demonstrated ability to analyze live grid measurements and provide actionable feedback to improve operational EMS system models. Nice-to-Have Qualifications (Preferred)
Advanced Degree:
Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline.
System Maintenance:
Experience maintaining State Estimator technical applications.
Tools & Software:
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (particularly advanced Excel and Word).
Communication & Leadership:
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a proven track record of building collaborative relationships across engineering and operations teams. Why Join Us?
