Job Description
Principal RF Software Engineer
OverviewAs a Principal Software Engineer supporting mission-essential national security initiatives, you will design, develop, integrate, and maintain secure, high-performance software solutions that enable critical intelligence, defense, and operational missions. Working alongside engineers, analysts, and mission stakeholders, you will build scalable applications and services that directly support the protection of U.S. national security interests.
This position requires a strong foundation in modern software engineering practices, the ability to work in highly collaborative Agile environments, and a commitment to developing resilient, secure, and reliable solutions for complex operational challenges. Successful candidates are passionate about solving difficult technical problems while delivering capabilities that have real-world mission impact. This position will support a mission-focused customer during the full life-cycle development of a Radio Frequency Processing System.
This role is based in Hanover, Maryland.

- Design, develop, implement, and optimize advanced DSP algorithms and software solutions.
- Analyze user and system requirements to derive software design, functional, and performance requirements.
- Design and develop new software applications and modify existing software to introduce new functionality.
- Develop and implement complex algorithms to meet or exceed established system performance and functional requirements.
- Design algorithms operating under strict timing, system-resource, performance, and interface constraints.
- Develop software supporting processing-intensive analytics, large-scale datasets, real-time systems, and advanced algorithm development.
- Develop and maintain software using C++, Python, Linux, and related development technologies.
- Debug existing software, identify root causes, and correct defects.
- Modify existing software to support new hardware, improve performance, and address changing operational requirements.
- Integrate existing software into new or modified systems and operating environments.
- Develop simple and complex queries and interfaces for databases and data repositories.
- Design and modify software systems using scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure design outcomes and performance.
- Review and test software components to ensure compliance with design and performance requirements.
- Develop and software test procedures and document results.
- Resolve software problem reports and support technical troubleshooting throughout the software lifecycle.
- Perform quality-control reviews of software products and engineering deliverables.
- Write, review, and maintain software and system documentation.
- Recommend and implement improvements to software development processes and documentation standards.
- Collaborate with Systems Engineers and Hardware Engineers to derive software requirements and identify system limitations, capabilities, interfaces, and performance requirements.
- Provide technical input into system design decisions, including hardware/software tradeoffs, software reuse, and
COTS/GOTS
integration.
- Coordinate software system installation and monitor system/equipment functionality to ensure operational requirements are met.
- Serve as a technical lead or software development team lead as appropriate.
- Oversee software development activities to ensure work complies with established development methodologies, standards, and project constraints.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline.
- 12+ years of experience as a DSP Algorithm Developer.
- 12+ years of software development experience using C++, Linux, Python, or similar development technologies.
- Hands-on C++ development experience within the last 10 years.
- Demonstrated experience designing and developing DSP algorithms.
- Strong experience with software and algorithm development in complex, performance-sensitive environments.
- Experience developing and implementing algorithms subject to performance, timing, resource, and interface constraints.
- Experience with software design, development, integration, testing, debugging, and performance optimization.
- Experience translating system and user requirements into software design and performance requirements.
- Experience working with scientific analysis, mathematical models, and/or advanced algorithm development.
- Experience collaborating across software, systems, and hardware engineering disciplines.
VTG's estimated starting pay range is $200K-$265K annually, which is a general guideline for the geographic location.
