Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
The Robotics Engineer develops, programs, integrates, commissions, and troubleshoots industrial robotic systems used in custom automated machinery. This position integrates robots with machine controls, safety systems, peripheral equipment, and end-of-arm tooling while ensuring each application meets Altron and customer requirements for safety, quality, performance, and documentation. The role works with Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Assembly, Program Management, and customers throughout design, build, runoff, installation, and field support.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Robot Programming and Integration:
Develop, modify, test, and optimize robot programs using teach pendants and three-dimensional offline simulation software. Set up, configure, and commission industrial robots, including Fanuc, Yaskawa Motoman, KUKA, and similar platforms. Configure and troubleshoot communication between robots, programmable logic controllers, safety systems, and peripheral equipment. Develop and support robotic applications including material handling, dispensing, routing, welding, and other automated processes. Define end-of-arm tooling requirements and support tooling selection, setup, integration, testing, and troubleshooting. Verify robot hardware installation and coordinate corrective action with Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Assembly as needed.
Commissioning, Debug, Installation, and Customer Support:
Debug and troubleshoot robot programs, communications, safety functions, process equipment, and application performance. Validate robotic safety systems and confirm compliance with applicable company, customer, and industry requirements. Confirm that robotic applications meet customer specifications, quality expectations, process requirements, and acceptance criteria. Support machine runoff, installation, startup, and field service activities at Altron and customer facilities. Travel up to 50% as required to support installations, startups, customer service, and other project needs, both domestically and internationally. Conduct operator and maintenance training when required. Communicate project status, technical concerns, and required corrective actions to the appropriate internal and customer contacts.
Technical Collaboration and Documentation:
Read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, controls documentation, and robot-to-PLC interfaces. Collaborate with Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Assembly, Program Management, customers, and vendors throughout project execution. Prepare and maintain robot software, operating procedures, setup information, and safety documentation. Assist with electrical and mechanical activities when needed to support project schedules and successful system integration. Participate in continuous improvement, quality, and workplace safety activities. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Associate degree in automation technology, robotics, mechatronics, electrical engineering technology, or a related field required; bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline preferred. One to five years of experience in industrial robotics, automation integration, robot programming, or a related field preferred. Experience with Fanuc, Yaskawa Motoman, KUKA, or similar industrial robot platforms. Familiarity with robotic material handling, dispensing, routing, welding, or similar applications. Working knowledge of robot programming, teach pendants, offline simulation software, robot communications, and machine-control practices. Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and controls documentation. Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand automated machine operation and end-of-arm tooling requirements. Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn required engineering and programming software. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with technical writing skills preferred. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and changing environment. Self-motivated and able to work effectively both independently and within cross-functional teams. Flexibility to work additional or nonstandard hours as project, installation, and customer requirements dictate.
