This role is mechanically focused and also requires enough electrical and controls knowledge to integrate sensors, cameras, robots, PLC signals, and 24 VDC industrial equipment. This is not a desk-only design position. The right person can inspect a production process, design the required mounting or fixture, wire and troubleshoot basic control interfaces, build a working demonstration, and support installation at the customer site.

Duties:
Application Development Review customer parts, processes, cycle-time requirements, robot access, fixtures, lighting, sensors, and PLC interfaces. Determine whether an application is technically feasible and identify the tests, samples, equipment, and assumptions needed before quoting or deployment. Build and validate demonstrations and proof-of-concept systems for inspection, robot guidance, bin picking, machine tending, OCR, and related applications. Define measurable acceptance criteria and document test results, risks, open items, and recommended next steps. Mechanical Design and Integration Design practical camera mounts, robot tooling, sensor brackets, fixtures, guards, and small automation assemblies. Produce 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and assembly instructions. Select appropriate materials, fasteners, fabricated parts, and purchase components while considering stiffness, vibration, adjustment, service access, and manufacturability. Work directly with machine shops, fabricators, integrators, and internal teams to move designs from concept through assembly and field use. Electrical and Controls Integration Connect and troubleshoot 24 VDC sensors, cameras, relays, solenoids, power supplies, industrial I/O, and basic safety interfaces. Read electrical schematics and verify signals using a multimeter and other standard diagnostic tools. Interface Solomon equipment with PLCs and robots using discrete I/O and common industrial networks. Diagnose whether an integration problem is mechanical, electrical, network-related, software-related, or application-related and coordinate the appropriate fix. Installation and Customer Support Support equipment setup, calibration, factory acceptance testing, installation, commissioning, and site acceptance testing. Work safely and effectively with customer engineers, operators, maintenance teams, system integrators, and Solomon's global engineering teams. Train customers and partners on system operation, routine checks, and first-line troubleshooting. Maintain clear project notes, configuration records, test evidence, and handoff documentation.
Required Qualifications:
Three or more years of hands-on experience in applications engineering, mechanical design, mechatronics, automation, robotics, machine building, or a closely related field. Practical 3D CAD experience; SolidWorks is preferred. Experience creating buildable parts and assemblies, including drawings, tolerances, bills of materials, and fabrication or machining coordination. Working knowledge of 24 VDC industrial electrical systems, sensors, relays, PNP/NPN signals, and PLC I/O. Ability to read mechanical drawings and basic electrical schematics and troubleshoot with standard tools. Experience assembling, testing, installing, commissioning, or servicing industrial equipment. Clear customer-facing communication and disciplined technical documentation. Ability to travel to industrial sites and work around production equipment. Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, automation, electrical engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
Helpful Experience:
Industrial cameras, lenses, lighting, triggering, calibration, or machine-vision inspection. 3D vision, structured-light scanning, point clouds, robot guidance, or bin picking. Robots from FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa, KUKA, Universal Robots, Staubli, or similar manufacturers. PLC communication using EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus

UA, or discrete I/O. Pneumatics, end-of-arm tooling, motion components, machine safety, or industrial networking. Python, C++, ROS, or vision software experience is useful but not required.
Role Boundaries:
This engineer should be comfortable integrating and troubleshooting industrial electrical and controls systems. The role is not intended to own PCB design, stamped electrical engineering, certified control-panel design, or large PLC programs. Solomon will use specialist internal or external support when those capabilities are required.
What Success Looks Like:
Within 90 days: Understand the core product portfolio, safely assemble and troubleshoot demo systems, and support application testing with guidance. Within 6 months: Independently complete customer discovery, mechanical integration, proof-of-concept testing, and routine field commissioning.
