The Survey Technician I will be part of a survey crew and tasked to perform the basic duties of the crew, including care & maintenance of equipment and set-up & break-down of equipment & survey sites that typically are in the middle of heavy traffic or construction. Candidates must possess a combination of knowledge and ability to perform the basic duties of a Survey Technician. Knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry is desired. Ideal candidates will have additional training or education such as college-level coursework in land surveying. The Construction Services Division of Public Works provides high quality solution-oriented services in the areas of Capital Public Project Inspection, Survey and Contract Administration, contributing to the physical, social and economic growth of the City of Anaheim. The Construction Services Division is committed to providing innovative construction management, sound engineering principles, interdepartmental participation and teamwork. Full Scope of duties:
Survey Technician I Under the direction of senior survey staff:
Active Field Support:
Collaborate as a key member of a field survey crew to support municipal projects including construction, topographic, boundary, and engineering surveys.
Site Reconnaissance:
Conduct physical field checks of project sites to identify landmarks, utility features, and potential safety hazards.
Precision Measurement:
Assist in capturing distances, angles, and elevations to define boundaries, easements, and infrastructure improvements using a variety of manual and electronic tools.
High-Tech Equipment Operation:
Set up, monitor, and maintain modern geospatial tools, including
GNSS/GPS
systems, robotic total stations, and digital leveling rods.
Staking & Marking:
Prepare and install survey markers and construction stakes to provide critical data for "cut and fill," stationing, and precise location positioning.
Digital Data Assistance:
Assist in the operation of electronic data collectors and provide basic support for computer-aided drafting (CAD) and GIS programs as needed.
Applied Mathematics:
Perform basic field calculations (algebra and geometry) and research city records to ensure project accuracy and data integrity.
Monument Preservation:
Assist in the physical establishment and preservation of official survey monuments throughout the City.
Crew Readiness:
Maintain and calibrate survey tools and equipment; ensure the crew vehicle is fully stocked, fueled, and organized for daily field operations.
Professional Development:
Proactively learn to operate advanced survey instrumentation and software under the mentorship of a Survey Party Chief or Survey Technician II.
Safety & Coordination:
Participate in maintaining a safe work environment, including the proper setup of traffic control devices and remaining vigilant of surroundings in high-traffic areas Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications Knowledge of:
basic surveying methods, practices and procedures; mathematics, trigonometry; basic drafting principles and GPS concepts; total station; basic operations of construction levels and concepts involving digital data collection.
Ability to:
work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals; understand and follow oral and written instructions; operate survey equipment; research, index, maintain and update records and files; work safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic and construction sites; establish effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Candidates must be in possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License by date of appointment. Driving is required for this position. Environmental Conditions:
Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents may be exposed to excessive heat/cold; inclement weather; high frequency noise; and dirt/dust. Travel from site to site in an outdoor field environment typically within the City Municipal limits.
Physical Conditions:
Incumbents must have the ability to stand; sit; walk; stoop; twist; bend; squat; kneel; lift up to 50 pounds; carry up to 35 pounds; speak; hear; see at a distance and up close; and perceive depth; and work safely within heavy traffic situations. Supplemental Information

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
- The City contracts with the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) to provide retirement benefits. Retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS.
Note :
Pension contribution limitations are set by CalPERS each calendar year, with compensation limit requirements for Public Employee Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) members and Classic members. Employee contributions will be deposited into a 401(a) account after reaching this limit. Employees with CalPERS membership dates prior to July 1, 1996 are not impacted by these limits.
