Current employees are encouraged to apply through our careers page at https://unitedutility.com/careers About the Role The Survey Technician II is an intermediate-level field position responsible for performing routine ground-based utility inspections, conductor observations, pole data collection, and daily field documentation with a reduced level of direct oversight. The Survey Technician II has developed a working familiarity with company and client standards and is expected to execute assigned inspection tasks independently, maintain accurate and complete field data, and contribute reliably to crew productivity. This role continues to build T&D knowledge and field competency in preparation for increased responsibility.
Key Responsibilities Field Inspections and Data Collection:
Perform ground-based pole inspections independently, documenting pole data including framing, attachments, hardware, and related utility asset information in accordance with company and client standards. Conduct conductor and wire observations from the ground, accurately noting conductor type, condition, and associated field details. Perform hammer sounding and sound testing on wood poles, applying proper technique and completing required documentation. Capture required field photography of poles, conductors, framing, and utility equipment, consistently meeting company and client photo standards without prompting. Operate handheld and ground-based LiDAR equipment as directed, applying working knowledge of collection parameters and equipment handling.
Field Data Management:
Review collected field data daily for completeness, clarity, and accuracy before end-of-day upload or transfer. Organize, label, and transfer field data in accordance with project naming conventions and file management protocols. Upload field data to designated platforms and confirm successful delivery as required by project procedures. Identify and resolve minor data gaps or inconsistencies in the field before they reach downstream workflows.
UAS and Crew Support:
Provide capable field logistics support to UAS crews when assigned, including equipment handling, battery management, and functioning as a visual observer. Assist with daily crew setup, breakdown, and field logistics as needed.
Quality and Standards:
Apply quality control awareness to daily field work, ensuring collected data and photos meet expected standards before submission. Flag field conditions or data issues that may affect project deliverables and communicate them to the supervising technician or Field Survey Supervisor.
Safety and Field Conduct:
Maintain consistent adherence to all safety protocols when working around utility infrastructure, roadways, traffic, and the public. Adapt effectively to changing field conditions throughout the workday. Participate actively in pre-job briefings and apply field safety practices without being directed. Maintain a clean driving record and operate vehicles in accordance with company policy. Travel frequently as required by project needs, including overnight stays.
Additional Responsibilities:
Perform all duties as directed by the Field Survey Supervisor in support of project and departmental objectives. Key Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum 1.5 years of field survey, utility inspection, or directly related field experience. Demonstrated familiarity with T&D infrastructure, utility poles, and associated equipment. Proficiency with tablets, laptops, and field data collection applications. Working knowledge of field photography standards and camera operation. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required. Ability to travel frequently with overnight stays as required by project assignments. Reliable and self-motivated with the ability to complete assigned tasks with limited direct supervision. Strong attention to detail with a consistent focus on data accuracy and completeness. Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a field crew. Commitment to field safety and professional conduct at all times. Key Nice to Haves Additional technical training or coursework in a related field. Ability to operate handheld and ground-based LiDAR equipment with instruction. Familiarity with hammer sounding procedures and conductor observation techniques.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Survey Technicians perform the majority of their work outdoors in active field environments. Employees are regularly required to walk extended distances on varied, uneven, or unstable terrain and stand for prolonged periods throughout the workday. Work is performed in all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, wind, and direct sun exposure. Employees regularly work in proximity to utility infrastructure, active roadways, vehicular traffic, and the general public, requiring constant situational awareness and strict adherence to safety protocols at all times. Travel is frequent and typically includes extended overnight stays away from home base.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Extended walking on varied, uneven, rough, or unstable terrain throughout the workday Standing for prolonged periods during field inspections Carrying and transporting field equipment including cameras, tablets, handheld LiDAR devices, and related gear Bending, stooping, and crouching to perform ground-level inspections and hammer sounding on utility poles Visual acuity to observe and document pole hardware, conductors, framing, and field conditions at varying distances Ability to work in all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and direct sunlight for extended periods Capacity to maintain focus and attention to detail over long field shifts in variable and demanding conditions Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle for extended periods, including to and from remote field sites
