POSITION
Survey Technician SUMMARY:
This position provides support to land surveyors by preparing routine layouts, sketches and diagrams, as well as performing simple property research. Makes simple decisions but refers most questions/problems to land surveyor or office manager. In addition, has a knowledge of civil engineering principles and terminology relevant to the practice of land surveying including construction methods, engineering plans and specifications. The Survey Technician may also coordinate other office technical work including supervising and coordinating the diverse survey activities of available staff. The Survey Technician processes and checks all drawing files, computations and deliverables the technical staff generates. The Survey Technician is required to work closely with the technical staff, the field coordinator and project manager to transition the project seamlessly from one phase to the next. This position must also be able to perform all the duties and responsibilities of a CAD operator and draftsperson. The Survey Technician may also occasionally fill-in a field crew position in their absence to maintain efficient and productive survey schedules. The Survey Technician is highly organized and able to multi-task. This work requires considerable judgment and tact when coordinating necessary procedures with survey technicians, the field coordinator and project managers.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
(Work assignments may vary depending on the office's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the office manager.) Uses computer assisted design/drafting equipment and software to develop surveying plans. Plans, organizes, and assigns all phases of the work to the technical staff under supervision; Recognizes any problems which have arisen in the work in progress, reports conflicting issues as they occur, and notifies the office manager for subsequent correction; Trains all technical staff in CAD drafting and processing of data, survey methodologies, techniques and procedures; Executes and / or supervises land records research. Performs boundary and rightofway analysis and computations. Assigns work to, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; Maintains computer equipment and technology devices; Develops and maintains technical procedures and policies, organizational tools and quality control procedures; Coordinates and works with other managers and supervisors.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Knowledge of:
AutoCAD is required with Microstation and Carlson Survey capabilities desirable; Competency in MS Office required; Preparation of computations for stakeout and building control computations; Principles and techniques of employee supervision, training and evaluation; Specific knowledge of VDOT practices and procedures desirable. PMI Rules and Personnel Policies/Procedures. PMI DrugFree Workplace Policy PMI Safety Policies and Procedures Skill in: Advanced surveying procedures Performing mathematical calculations requiring probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Interpreting construction plans and specifications, maps, plats and legal descriptions; Communicating both orally and in writing for effective interface with clients, contractors, staff and management; Directing, supervising, training, and evaluating performance of assigned staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER:
1. Five years of CAD experience and two years of experience supervising and training technical staff performing CAD duties (which may be concurrent with general experience). (Satisfactory completion of a CAD course from an accredited college, vocational/technical school or military training may be substituted for two years of the required CAD experience.)
OR:
2. Five years of experience with PMI or another organization as a Survey CAD Operator.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
PMI has offices in different geographical locations. We workshare which may mean temporary assignments to other offices' projects that, in turn, may require travel. While we make every attempt to balance individuals' personal schedules, this travel may be unexpected and require weekend stays. This position requires up to 10% travel time outside of area and overnight. The travel may be for work-related duties or training.

Physical/Sensory Requirements:
o While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. oThe employee is occasionally required to stand. The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
Education Requirements:
o Associates degree or equivalent from twoyear college or technical school preferred High School Diploma or GED required
