Job Description

Field Survey Crew Chief / Instrument Operator — Land Surveying & Site Development About the Firm American Services of Miami is a full-service civil engineering, land surveying, and site planning firm with over 30 years of history in South Florida. We handle the entire development lifecycle in-house — from boundary surveys through final plat — for residential, commercial, and industrial developers across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Our clients include some of the most active developers in the region. We are under new ownership and investing in modern surveying technology, digital field workflows, and a team built to scale. We're looking for experienced field professionals who take pride in precision and want to be part of a firm that's growing. About the Role This is a full-time field position. You will be responsible for performing boundary surveys, topographic surveys, construction layout, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, elevation certificates, and construction observation across residential, commercial, and municipal projects throughout South Florida. You'll work directly with our office survey team and engineering staff, capturing the field data that drives every design and plat our firm produces. Accuracy matters — our engineers design water, sewer, paving, and drainage systems based on your data. When the field work is right, everything downstream runs smoothly. This is not a temporary or seasonal role. You'll be a core member of our field operations with a consistent pipeline of work, a company-provided equipment package, and a clear path to grow with the firm. What You'll Do Perform boundary surveys, topographic surveys, ALTA/NSPS surveys, construction layout, elevation certificates, and as-built surveys across residential subdivisions, commercial developments, and municipal infrastructure projects. Operate and maintain survey-grade
GPS/GNSS
receivers, robotic total stations, and data collectors (Trimble, Leica, or equivalent) to capture accurate field data in accordance with Florida Minimum Technical Standards. Set and recover survey control points, property corners, benchmarks, and construction reference points. Locate existing utilities, structures, vegetation, and site features for topographic mapping. Perform construction staking and layout for building pads, roads, utilities, drainage structures, and site grading per approved engineering plans. Collect, organize, and transmit field data to the office drafting team daily, including point files, field codes, photos, and sketches with clear notation. Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and office staff on project schedules, site access, and deliverable timelines. Communicate proactively when field conditions differ from plan or when additional data collection is needed. Conduct site reconnaissance and pre-survey research as needed, including locating existing monuments, reviewing recorded plats, and identifying potential access or boundary issues before mobilizing. Maintain all field equipment in good working condition. Perform routine calibrations, report equipment issues promptly, and ensure instruments are stored and transported securely. Operate drones (UAV) for aerial site photography, volumetric analysis, and topographic data capture as required. (Training provided if not yet certified.) Use mobile field applications to log work progress, upload site photos, record subcontractor activity, and update project status in real time. What We're Looking For (Required) 3+ years of field surveying experience in South Florida, with demonstrated proficiency in boundary, topographic, and construction layout surveys. Hands-on experience operating survey-grade
GPS/GNSS
equipment and robotic total stations (Trimble, Leica, Topcon, or equivalent). Working knowledge of Florida Minimum Technical Standards (Chapter 5J-17, F.A.C.) and standard surveying practices for property boundary determination. Ability to read and interpret recorded plats, legal descriptions, engineering plans, and construction drawings. Valid Florida driver's license and a reliable personal vehicle for daily travel to project sites across Miami-Dade and Broward counties. (Mileage reimbursement provided.) Physically able to work outdoors in South Florida conditions — heat, rain, uneven terrain, and dense vegetation. This role requires standing, walking, and carrying equipment for extended periods. Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy. Our engineering team designs infrastructure based on your field data — precision is non-negotiable. Comfortable working independently in the field while maintaining clear communication with the office team. Proficiency with smartphones and basic mobile applications for field reporting, photo documentation, and GPS navigation. Preferred (Not Required) Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM) license or Surveyor Intern (SI) certification. FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate for commercial drone operations. (We will sponsor certification for the right candidate.) Experience with digital field data collection software (Trimble Access, Trimble Business Center, Carlson SurvCE, or equivalent). Experience with coded point collection and standardized field coding for automated CAD processing. Familiarity with
ALTA/NSPS
land title survey requirements and Table A optional items. Experience on large-scale subdivision projects involving multi-day phased survey campaigns. Bilingual English/Spanish. (Many of our project sites, crews, and subcontractors operate in both languages.) What We Provide Survey-grade GPS, total station, data collector, and all field equipment — company provided and maintained. Drone equipment and training for candidates interested in aerial data capture. Competitive hourly rate based on experience, with overtime available. Health insurance — employer contributes toward employee premium. 401(k) retirement plan with employer match. Paid time off and paid holidays. Mileage reimbursement for use of personal vehicle. Consistent, year-round pipeline of work — no seasonal layoffs. Small team environment where your work directly impacts project outcomes and client satisfaction. Path to grow — whether that's toward a PSM license, crew leadership, or specializing in drone-based surveying and digital site intelligence.
