Job Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
The City of Galesburg is soliciting applications from candidates interested in the Engineering Technician position in the Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works. This full-time position is responsible for general engineering activities associated with assigned City construction projects. This is an overtime-eligible, AFSCME bargaining unit position compensated at an hourly pay rate of between $28.75 and $36.81 per hour, depending on experience, in addition to the full range of City benefits that include a generous paid leave policy, pension, and health insurance.DUTIES OF THE POSITION
This full-time position assists with managing construction projects and checks for compliance with plans, specifications, and accepted engineering practices. Documents the progress, cost, and material quantities used on City construction projects in accordance with IDOT policies. Performs field surveys, keeps accurate field notes, layout and preparation of maps, plans, and profiles of streets, sewers, and properties in CAD format, prepares quantity and cost estimates, and monitors activities of construction crews. Provides layout staking for construction crews and operates surveying equipment. Also performs topographic surveys, including cross sections, for construction plans. Issues permits and provides information to property owners and contractors undertaking construction projects within the public rights-of-way. May perform additional duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An Associate degree in civil engineering or a related field plus one year of directly relevant experience is required; five years of directly relevant experience may be considered in lieu of the degree. Applicants must possess an extensive knowledge of mathematics, have a working knowledge of the use of surveying tools and instruments, and a basic knowledge of computer-aided drafting (CAD) systems. Knowledge of civil engineering and construction practices, techniques, and principles is a plus. The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co‐workers, the public, and contractors, and to communicate effectively is essential. Applicants should be self‐starters with the ability to work under minimal supervision, and be organized and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Applicants must have the ability to plan, organize, direct, instruct, schedule, and coordinate the daily work on an assigned jobsite, and to complete IDOT-required paperwork in a timely manner.HOW TO APPLY A
