Survey Crew Chief Job Description The Survey Crew Chief interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates survey assignments for a variety of projects, including land and topographic surveys. This role plans and develops projects that may involve unique or complex challenges with significant impact on major company initiatives. The position emphasizes strong technical expertise in surveying rather than formal management responsibilities and offers the opportunity to contribute directly to a growing firms success. Responsibilities Interpret project requirements and translate them into clear, actionable survey plans. Organize and coordinate survey assignments from initiation through completion, ensuring accuracy and adherence to project specifications. Plan and develop survey projects that address unique or complex problems and may significantly influence major company projects. Execute land and topographic surveys, including data collection, verification, and documentation. Coordinate with internal teams to support permitting, scheduling, and project management activities related to survey work. Utilize survey instruments such as total stations and related equipment to collect precise field data. Apply surveying software tools, including Civil 3D, Trimble, AutoCAD, and related platforms, to process, analyze, and present survey data where applicable. Collaborate with field personnel to ensure proper execution of survey tasks and adherence to safety and quality standards. Review survey results for completeness and accuracy, and prepare clear documentation and reports for project stakeholders. Participate in occasional site visits to support field survey activities and verify conditions as needed. Essential Skills Proven experience as a Survey Crew Chief, with the ability to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate survey assignments. Strong technical proficiency in land surveying and topographic surveys. Experience with project planning and development, particularly for survey projects that may involve complex or unique challenges. Working knowledge of project management principles as they apply to survey work, including coordination, scheduling, and permitting support. Familiarity with surveying tools and methods, including total stations and related equipment. Ability and willingness to work in the field as needed to support survey activities. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in data collection, analysis, and documentation. Effective communication skills to collaborate with office and field teams and convey technical information clearly. Additional Skills & Qualifications At least 3 years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief, including use of Civil 3D and Trimble on survey projects, is a plus but not required. Field experience is preferred but not required. Experience with Civil 3D, Trimble, and AutoCAD for survey design, drafting, and data processing. Experience with land survey and topographic survey workflows, including preparation of survey deliverables. Exposure to permitting processes and scheduling activities related to survey and land development projects. Interest in contributing to a growing firm and building long-term project experience, including work on parks, recreation facilities, and solar field developments. Work Environment The role is based in a smaller office environment with approximately 8 team members in the office and around 20 team members in the field. The position is primarily office-based, with occasional site visits, typically about once a week, to support and verify field survey activities. The firm is growing under new ownership and is securing a high volume of work, including projects for parks and recreation facilities and multiple solar field developments. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement, with the opportunity to work remotely for 3 days per week and potentially 4 days per week after one year of employment, depending on performance and business needs. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Poolesville, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $65000.00 - $80000.00/yr.
