Landmark Builders is seeking a Field Engineer (Survey) to lead survey and field control work on our active construction sites — establishing horizontal and vertical control, staking layout, and collecting the field data that keeps design, estimating, and construction moving in sync. This role owns the surveying and instrumentation side of fieldwork in depth: total stations, robotic instruments, GPS/GNSS/RTK systems, and the data collection and modeling software behind them. The Field Engineer (Survey) works closely with site superintendents, project managers, project developers, and the Engineering Services Director, and may direct the work of an Assistant Field Engineer. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to build a career around precision fieldwork and grow toward greater survey responsibility inside a commercial construction organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Survey & Layout Establish and maintain control, both horizontal and vertical, on all Landmark projects. Perform construction/site layout and staking — translating plans into physical reference points for excavation, foundations, utilities, and grading crews. Operate total stations (setup, backsighting, traversing), robotic total stations, and data collectors to gather field data and lay out project information. Use GPS/GNSS and RTK systems for high-accuracy positioning where applicable. Use automatic and digital levels for elevation control. Gather field data to support development of topographic maps. Data, Software & Documentation Process, model, and share field data using field-to-finish software tied to the total station/GPS system in use. Support CAD drafting and plan review (AutoCAD Civil 3D or equivalent). Maintain accurate field notes, survey reports, and as-built documentation. Perform error checking and adjustment, catching and correcting measurement discrepancies before they become field problems. Coordination & Direction Take direction from site superintendents, project managers, project developers, and the Engineering Services Director. Coordinate survey work with the project schedule so it supports the critical path rather than trailing it. Work together with site subcontractors to complete daily tasks as directed by the site superintendent. Direct and review the work of an Assistant Field Engineer, where assigned.
Qualifications:
Experience & Technical Knowledge Experience with land/topographic surveying or construction site layout, including establishing control, boundary lines, and elevations. Hands-on proficiency with total stations, robotic total stations, and data collectors; GPS/GNSS and RTK experience a plus. Familiarity with automatic and digital levels for elevation control. Working knowledge of CAD (AutoCAD Civil 3D or equivalent) and field-to-finish data collection software. Understanding of grading, drainage, and earthwork concepts (cut/fill, benchmarks, elevations). Trigonometry, geometry, and coordinate geometry (COGO) sufficient for angle, distance, and elevation calculations, and for checking and adjusting field measurements. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plats, legal descriptions, and civil/site plans. Basic understanding of construction sequencing, so survey work supports the schedule rather than trailing it. Familiarity with local/state surveying regulations and licensing requirements, and basic legal boundary and property law principles relevant to site work. General digital literacy — comfortable adopting new field technology and software updates. Credentials & Software (Preferred) Survey technician certification (e.g., NSPS Certified Survey Technician / CST) a plus. Progress toward Licensed/Professional Land Surveyor (PLS/LS) a plus for candidates seeking to grow in the field.
OSHA 10/30
certification. Drone/UAV pilot certification (FAA Part 107) a plus, where aerial survey work is involved. Point cloud/3D modeling or GIS software experience a plus. Leadership & Interpersonal Skills Strong attention to detail — small errors compound quickly in layout work. Clear communication with superintendents, engineers, and field crews. Problem-solving under field conditions (weather, access, conflicting data). Physical stamina and comfort working outdoors in varied conditions. Strong time management — survey work is often on the project's critical path.
