Job Overview Instrument Man Rodman / Field Survey Assistant These are excellent opportunities for students, recent graduates, or individuals looking to begin or advance a career in land surveying. The positions offer practical, hands-on experience supporting boundary, topographic, construction, and other field-survey assignments while working with experienced survey personnel. Candidates with an interest in surveying, geomatics, construction layout, GPS/GNSS, total stations, data collectors, or pursuing surveying licensure are encouraged to apply. Prior field experience is helpful but not necessarily required for the Rodman position; dependability, willingness to learn, attention to detail, and the ability to work outdoors are especially important. Duties Set up and operate surveying instruments such as total stations, GPS systems, 3D scanners, and LiDAR to collect accurate field data. Assist with construction layout surveys and construction staking to ensure project specifications are met on-site. Conduct utility locating using specialized equipment to identify underground utilities before excavation or construction activities. Support topographic and land surveys by measuring distances, angles, elevations, and recording data with GPS, Total Stations and Data Collectors. Help perform ALTA surveys and legal descriptions by gathering precise measurements and verifying property boundaries. Maintain survey equipment including calibration, cleaning, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance. Experience Prior experience or training in land surveying practices is preferred but not required; a strong willingness to learn is essential. Knowledge of trigonometry, geometry, algebra, and math fundamentals relevant to land measurement techniques. Familiarity with surveying tools including total stations, levels, hand tools, GPS units, 3D scanners, LiDAR systems, and data collection methods. Ability to perform physical tasks involving heavy lifting and prolonged outdoor work in various weather conditions. Strong attention to detail with excellent data collection skills combined with good communication abilities for team collaboration.
