DOE Kinkaid Civil Construction (KCC) is a 100% employee-owned heavy civil contractor specializing in underground wet utilities, earthwork, grading, and roadway infrastructure. We are seeking an experienced Lead Surveyor to support our Utah operations. This position will lead construction surveying activities and provide accurate layout, staking, grade control, and field support for heavy civil projects throughout the Salt Lake City area. Position Summary The Lead Surveyor works closely with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Engineers, Project Managers, and field crews to ensure construction is completed according to project plans, specifications, elevations, and established control. The ideal candidate has hands-on surveying experience in heavy civil construction, underground utilities, earthwork, grading, and roadway projects and can independently manage field surveying activities. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Perform construction layout and staking for heavy civil projects. Establish and maintain horizontal and vertical control. Provide layout for water, sewer, storm drain, and other underground utility installations. Perform staking and grade verification for excavation, earthwork, grading, and roadway construction. Calculate and verify elevations, slopes, offsets, alignments, grades, and coordinates. Perform as-built surveys and maintain accurate field documentation. Review construction plans, specifications, CAD files, and survey data. Operate
GPS/GNSS
equipment, robotic total stations, levels, and data collectors. Support GPS and machine-control operations for earthwork activities. Coordinate daily survey needs with field and project leadership. Identify and communicate discrepancies between field conditions and project plans. Lead and provide direction to Assistant Surveyors and other survey personnel. Maintain survey equipment, control points, benchmarks, and project records. Requirements 3+ years of construction surveying experience , preferably in heavy civil construction. Experience with underground utilities, earthwork, grading, and/or roadway construction . Ability to independently perform construction layout and staking. Strong understanding of elevations, grades, slopes, coordinates, and alignments. Experience with
GPS/GNSS
equipment, robotic total stations, levels, and data collectors. Ability to read and interpret civil plans, profiles, cross-sections, and specifications. Strong communication, leadership, mathematical, and problem-solving skills. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and active construction environments. Preferred Qualifications Experience with water, sewer, and storm drain construction. Trimble and/or Topcon equipment experience. Experience with GPS machine-control systems. AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, or similar software experience. Previous experience leading survey personnel. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
