Overview We are seeking an experienced Survey Instrument Operator to support surveying and engineering operations in a 100% field-based role based in Stafford, VA. This position is designed for a motivated survey professional ready to advance into a Junior Party Chief path through fast-paced, hands-on training. The role involves performing topographic surveys, control setup, property corner searches, and easement/right-of-way staking using GPS and conventional survey equipment, while supporting field operations across varying terrain and environmental conditions. Key Responsibilities Use GPS equipment to establish control points, conduct property corner searches, perform topographic surveys, and stake easements and rights-of-way Utilize Total Station equipment as needed to support survey operations Operate, maintain, and help troubleshoot conventional and electronic survey instruments and related hardware/software Record detailed field notes and perform basic in-field calculations Maintain survey equipment and supplies to support ongoing field activities Assist with interpreting plats and deeds of record for survey execution Support training and development activities aligned with progression into a Party Chief role Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and transport equipment over uneven terrain Perform additional duties as assigned to support surveying and engineering projects Required Qualifications Valid driver's license required Minimum two (2) years of experience using GPS survey equipment required Ability to operate survey equipment including conventional and electronic instruments, as well as associated computer hardware and software Ability to train others in the use of survey equipment Capable of lifting and transporting equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and over uneven terrain Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills Willingness to learn all aspects of surveying and grow into a Party Chief-level role Ability to travel overnight as needed Preferred Qualifications At least two (2) years of experience using conventional survey equipment Experience utilizing Total Station equipment Experience reading and interpreting plats and deeds of record Experience recording detailed field notes and performing basic in-field calculations Work Environment / Additional Information 100% field-based onsite role Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds and traversing uneven terrain Overnight travel may be required based on project needs Hands-on training and advancement path toward Party Chief responsibilities EEO / Disclaimer (USA) The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the incumbent(s) of this job.
