Job Description

Job Summary The Sustainability Specialist develops and promotes the District's recycling, waste diversion, and sustainability programs through education, outreach, partnerships, and program development. This position also supports the marketing and movement of recyclable commodities, evaluates program performance, oversees educational facility tours, and manages sustainability-related website and social media content.
Essential Functions:
Develops, implements, and promotes recycling, waste diversion, and sustainability programs and initiatives. Plans and conducts educational presentations, outreach activities, facility tours, and community events while building partnerships with businesses, schools, community organizations, and public agencies. Researches and recommends new recycling initiatives, materials, partnerships, and program opportunities. Identifies grant opportunities, prepares applications, administers awarded grants, and completes required reporting. Conducts Material Recovery Facility audits and analyzes program data to identify opportunities for improvement. Assists with marketing recyclable commodities and coordinating the movement of recovered materials. Supervises educational facility tour guides and develops sustainability-related educational, website, and social media content. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability, public administration, communications, or a related field. Three years of progressively responsible experience in sustainability, recycling, environmental programs, public outreach, education, communications, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Valid Utah driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of recycling, waste diversion, sustainability, and resource conservation practices. Strong written, verbal, and public presentation skills. Ability to develop and coordinate programs, grants, outreach activities, and community partnerships. Ability to collect, analyze, and present program data and technical information. Ability to supervise, train, and coordinate educational tour staff. Ability to manage multiple projects, establish priorities, build effective working relationships, and work independently.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Works in both office and outdoor operational environments, with regular travel to District facilities and community locations. Must be able to conduct presentations and facility tours and occasionally lift or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds. May be exposed to weather, uneven terrain, dust, odors, noise, moving equipment, and vehicle traffic. Required PPE must be worn in operational areas.
Schedule:
Primarily Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and Saturdays for community meetings, outreach activities, and special events.
