Working alongside our project management and field crews, you take each installed mechanical plant (heating, cooling, etc.) from pre-startup readiness through first fire, functional testing, and verified operation — then document the finished system and hand a fully commissioned plant to the owner and our service team. Because Dual Fuel self-performs the work, your engineering carries all the way through to a completed, tested, and documented retrofit. You are the person who confirms the system runs the way it was designed to run — and who signs the report that says so. This is a hands-on role. You will be in the mechanical room operating equipment, taking readings, running combustion tests, and verifying control circuits — not directing the work from a desk. What You'll Do Commissioning Planning (Technical Review)
- Join the project team at technical review to build the commissioning plan for each installed system — the functional tests, KPIs, and data you will need to prove performance.
- Review finalized schematics and the written Sequence of Operations for HVAC systems, steam, hydronic, and domestic hot water systems. Raise design or constructability questions as RFIs before installation.
- Define startup sequencing, long-term data-logging needs, and any specialized test equipment ahead of the field date. Pre-Startup Readiness & Walkthrough
- Walk the installation near the end of the plumbing scope to confirm hardware is installed per print and manufacturer I&O, sensors are correctly located, and all wiring is complete.
- Own the go/no-go call on startup readiness; log deficiencies to the project punch list with an owner and due date on each item, and hold the startup until the site and equipment are ready.
- Confirm OEM/vendor startup techs, shutdown windows (heat, DHW, gas, electric), Con Edison gas turn-on, and inspection coordination are locked before mobilizing by . Startup Execution (Hands-On)
- Energize and start boilers, pumps, and controls; confirm each unit fires and runs, and that all inputs and outputs are reading correctly.
- Run combustion analysis on a calibrated analyzer; set and record O₂, CO, stack temperature, and combustion efficiency across the firing range.
- Verify safeties and interlocks — LWCO, high-limit, gas pressure switches, flame safeguard, and proof-of-closure — function as designed.
- Check and troubleshoot line
- and low-voltage control circuits, and set up longer-term test instrumentation for the commissioning phase. Commissioning & Functional Testing
- Prove system sequencing and equipment staging behave per the Sequence of Operations — lead/lag rotation, modulation, day/night setback, and summer/winter changeover.
- Confirm all subsystems meet requirements, including condensate, vacuum, and return pumps on steam plants.
- Validate that controls — including Dualfuel's Axxon platform where included — are reading and commanding equipment correctly.
- Use temporary data logging to confirm performance over time (day vs. night, part-load modulation, multi-unit staging), and log every finding to the punch list in real time. Reporting, Documentation & Closeout
- Produce the Commissioning Report documenting as-commissioned setpoints, test results, and verified operation — delivered shortly after the final commissioning visit and filed to the project record.
- Prepare the client-facing version of the report and the on-site Boiler Room Settings document that stays with the plant for the service team. What You'll Bring Required
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering strongly preferred (or equivalent hands-on heating-systems experience).
- 4+ years of hands-on experience with commercial heating equipment — boilers, burners, pumps, and controls.
- Working knowledge of NYC steam and hydronic heating systems.
- Comfortable getting hands-on in an active mechanical room — operating boilers and pumps, taking meter and gauge readings, and safely checking and troubleshooting electrical control circuits.
- Ability to read mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, and a written Sequence of Operations.
- Strong written communication — you will write the reports owners and our service team rely on.
- Valid driver's license; able to travel to job sites across NYC and Westchester.
- OSHA SST safety training certification. Preferred
- 3+ years of startup and commissioning experience on boiler or heating-plant installations.
- Understanding of combustion analysis and optimization.
- Familiarity with building controls / BAS and remote-monitoring platforms.
- Understanding and familiarity with LL87 and LL97 retro commissioning and reporting.
