Job Overview We are seeking a Senior Water Treatment Engineer (Environmental Engineer III) to join the water team within Environmental Engineering, part of Facilities Engineering. The team is the corporate technical hub for water and wastewater treatment, supporting upstream, low carbon, and downstream operations worldwide, with most work centered on downstream refining and chemical complexes. Driven by country programs and a need for deep domain expertise, this critical role will spend at least two-thirds of its time troubleshooting and solving day-to-day operational problems across raw water, utilities water, wastewater, and produced water systems, while also shaping early-phase project decisions on technology selection and design basis. The engineer joins a group of senior subject matter experts who support the principal engineers and help develop early-career engineers at the Kuala Lumpur technology center. This is a 12-month contract with strong potential for extension Responsibilities Troubleshoot and resolve day-to-day operational issues in raw water, utilities water, wastewater, and produced water systems at sites worldwide. Lead technical investigations, root cause analyses, treatment chemistry evaluations, and corrective actions to improve system performance and reliability. Serve as the go-to technical resource for site operations teams that escalate water treatment problems they cannot solve locally. Optimize biological wastewater treatment, ion exchange, membrane, and oil-water separation systems at operating brownfield facilities. Support boiler feed water production and water chemistry programs that are critical to site utilities and steam systems. Guide early-phase (Stage 2 and Stage 3) capital projects on treatment technology selection and development of the design basis. Provide technical oversight through design, contractor execution, startup, and performance optimization for existing and greenfield facilities. Serve as Lead Process Engineer and/or Technology Lead on water, wastewater, and produced water capital projects as assigned. Evaluate and deploy established, emerging, and proprietary water treatment technologies in line with engineering standards and best practices. Advise management on the technical, operational, business, and sustainability risks of water treatment, reduction, and reuse solutions. Partner with operations, engineering, research, and business teams to develop water stewardship, reuse, and resource optimization strategies. Mentor and coach early- and mid-career engineers, including the Kuala Lumpur technology center team, to build technical capability and institutional knowledge. Travel to North American sites on an as-needed basis to support critical operational issues. Qualifications Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree (minimum) in Chemical, Environmental, Civil, or a related engineering discipline. 10+ years of experience in industrial water, wastewater, and/or produced water treatment, water reuse, or process engineering. Hands-on troubleshooting experience on operating industrial water or wastewater systems, beyond design and commissioning alone. Deep expertise in one or more of the following: biological wastewater treatment, water chemistry (boiler feed or produced water), ion exchange and membrane processes, or oil-water separation and produced water treatment. Experience supporting both operating facilities and capital project execution. Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and influence technical decisions across organizations. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Proficiency in Excel and Word, as the team's design practices and tools are largely Excel-based. Ability to work on-site at the Houston campus the majority of the week, with flexibility for up to two remote days. Ability to flex working hours for occasional early morning and evening calls with global teams. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Preferred Qualifications Working experience across several water streams (raw water, utilities water, industrial wastewater, and produced water). Industrial background in oil and gas, refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, power generation, or similar sectors, favored over municipal experience. Experience with boiler feed water treatment and steam system chemistry. Early-phase project experience in technology selection and design basis development. Proficiency with water chemistry modeling software such as OLI, or with wastewater process modeling tools. Experience mentoring or developing junior engineers.
