Job Description
Position Summary The Environmental Scientist is responsible for conducting environmental research, fieldwork, data collection, and analysis to support the protection and sustainability of Tribal natural resources. This role assesses environmental conditions, evaluates the impact of human activity, and ensures compliance with environmental regulations and grant requirements. The position supports conservation, restoration, and education initiatives while collaborating with Tribal leadership, community members, and external agencies. This role contributes to the stewardship of land, water, and natural systems in alignment with Tribal values and long-term sustainability. This is an onsite position located on the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska reservation near White Cloud Kansas. Key Responsibilities Environmental Monitoring & Fieldwork Conduct surface water, sediment, and biological sampling on Tribal lands Assist with environmental monitoring activities for Tribal programs and the Ioway Tribal National Park Operate, maintain, and calibrate field and laboratory equipment Perform fieldwork in varying terrain and weather conditions Ensure proper handling, storage, and documentation of collected samples Research, Planning & Reporting Develop monitoring strategies, sampling plans, and quality assurance project plans Prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical reports Analyze environmental data and prepare progress and regulatory reports Maintain accurate and organized environmental records and documentation Data Management & Compliance Collect, manage, and maintain environmental data systems Ensure compliance with Tribal, federal, and state environmental regulations Support grant reporting requirements, including monthly and quarterly documentation Assist in maintaining audit-ready records for environmental programs Grant Support & Program Development Research funding opportunities and assist in grant development Support implementation of grant-funded environmental programs Assist with additional Tribal park and environmental initiatives as assigned Community Outreach & Education Conduct outreach and educational activities related to environmental issues Provide information to community members on environmental protection and sustainability Represent the Tribe at regional and national meetings, trainings, and workshops Administrative & Operational Support Complete administrative tasks including filing, purchase orders, and reporting Maintain equipment, supplies, and workstation organization Travel as needed for trainings, certifications, and meetings Performs other related duties Required Skills & Abilities Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills Effective written and verbal communication skills Strong interpersonal and diplomatic communication abilities Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office products Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions Ability to work flexible or occasional non-standard hours Valid driver's license and ability to travel overnight as needed Professional appearance and conduct Software & Tools Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) Environmental monitoring equipment (e.g., sondes, multimeter handheld devices) Data collection and reporting systems Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biological Science, Physical Science, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience Preferred Experience working with Tribal, federal, or state environmental programs Experience with grant-funded projects Field sampling and environmental monitoring experience Decision-Making & Scope Exercises independent judgment in fieldwork, data collection, and reporting Identifies and resolves routine environmental and operational issues Escalates regulatory, safety, or compliance concerns as appropriate Supports program development within established guidelines and funding requirements Physical Demands Hiking and navigating uneven terrain Wading in water and practicing water safety Handling and transporting equipment Operating field and light machinery Work Environment Combination of office and outdoor field environments Exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, and wet environments
